Boot in Chicago

Holy freakin hell, im so pissed
I go last night to the city and park in a lot usually reserved for a coffee shop. i need to make a quick stop across the street, was gone for like 10 mins, come back and tehres a f***in boot on my car. dude comes up to me w/a canned speech, records teh convo, says its 115 to take it off, i broke the rules, blah blah. i made sure to actually go into the shop and buy a coffee as proof if anything but hes like "no, you went outside the limits". anyway, anybody had experience w/these? i dunno how to fight back, issue a chargeback for my credit card? contact his company directly? it looks like he was running a trap of sorts. he sits in the corner of the alley where nobody can see him. another dude that looks homeless sits out in the lot and follows ppl to see where they go. when theyre gone they boot em and write em up. i know cause i saw him do it to someone right after me. someone PLEASE help...

The people that run the boot program are a seperate entity from the police. I have heard and been with friends who parked near the Clark and Belmont area and this is what happened to them. They visit The Alley and park in the Dunkin Donuts - everyone knows you can not do this. Actually lucky you did not get towed.

In your defense, not sure what you can do. In my experience all they have to prove is you went "beyond" the use of the spot. Yes, you bought an item from the business that reserves the spot. However, you continued your shopping at other establishments while utilizing the same spot reserved for a different business.

The only recourse I see you having is to file your dispute with the credit card company and see if they agree. May take a long time but worth a shot.

Plus, one other thing... you said they recorded the conversation. At any time if you used the phrase, "But I only..." or "...it was only for a minute", you are more or less stuck on a civil process admission of guilt.

Good Luck.

What do the internet and Channel 11 have in common? They are both a window to the world; put it out there and do not be surprised who will see it.

Dude, the guy at the coffee shop is trying to run a business. How is he supposed to generate business if his lot is always full? If you get 10 people per day who just want to "run a quick errand" that is almost two hours out of the 8 hours he is open for business.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

Sucks but just pay it....dispute it but it may be more hassle than it's worth.

+1. There's almost definitely a sign posted nearby that says you'll get booted if you leave the lot for any reason, for any amount of time (in fact, if it's actually the lot near The Alley, then I know there is one) and they came through on it for you. It sucks, but call it tuition and take the bus next time.
