I live in Huntley and a cop gave me a ticket for not having a valid registration sticker on my tag, I told him thats why its parked on my driveway, not being driven because I havent renewed it, (thinking of selling it) its only ten bucks but its on my property and not being driven. any advice.

Sorry, I got the same deal in Huntley. Plates have to be current. I even had my car backed in.

Just another way to generate revenue.

Yes you'll have to pay for both years. Even if the vehicle hasen't been on the road.

Unless the changed the rules recently, thats how it was for me in '07

My brother had the same thing happen (in huntley). So he just covered up his plates with paper in the driveway. Worked for him.

Huntley cops don't have anything better to do....

it has to be a city ordinance, there is no state statute for this... i'm sure you can look it up if you want to.

same happened to me in morton grove. the cop actually came all the way up the driveway (its 7 car lengths long), walked around my Durango and ticketed my Riviera (which was backed in with the bumper nearly touching the garage door) for no current tag.
as stated... a revenue generator

This sounds messed up to me. If a car isn't being driven why does it need to be registered?

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Now that is just out of control! How would you like to be the cop who's put on assignment to check every parked car for a stupid little sticker and ticket them for $10 a pop? Talk about a rookie job!

if its over 2 years and you dont have a personal plate, just get new plates. Thats what i did on the alero. Lapsed 3 years and it was cheaper to get new tags.

Thats crap though that the cops can give you a ticket on private property

I know, what really bothers me is Mr policeman got off his squad car, walked up to my car on my driveway, and gave me a ticket. Talk about nothing better else to do.

Get a car cover for your car. This usually solves the problem with expired plate sticker or village sticker. Or get a dog on your property, doubt the cop would walk on your property.

But I always thought this was bullshiet, that a cop can walk on your property without probable cause. He has no reason to get on the property in the first place. It's the same shiet that I'm going thru.

I only have to pay 10 or 20 dollars extra with the sticker fee to get a new plate and sticker if the motorcycle has not been renewed in 2 years.

But he does have probable cause. He can see from the street that the sticker is expired.

And what if he can't?

This happens to me and a lot of other people. Cops walk on private property to check for valid sticker and village sticker. You can't see if a village sticker is expired 500 feet away.

Just like Blackrose, the plates were hidden from view. cop walked on his property.

If the police officer can see it from the street, ticket the vehicle. If the guys walking all over peoples property for money generator, thats violating everyones rights.

Like Muskrat said, this is probably a local ordinance; most likely associated with a law on abandoned or nuisance vehicles on property. Some villages, although not covered by Home Rule, have City/Village rules that allow them to come upon private property for the purpose of enforcing City/Village ordinances. This is not a violation of your private property or constitutional amendment rights.

If I were a betting man, someone (neighbor maybe) noticed a vehicle not moved in a period of time and reported it. Whether it was reported to the building department or the police department, either way, it violated village code. Once reported, then the police take notice and drive by every now and then to see if it has moved. If not, it has violated a local ordinance. This is why it is a $10.00 ticket and not a $75.00 state citation.

Also, if your village requires you to have a valid city sticker in your windshield, you need to have one even if the vehicle does not move. The vehicle is registered to you and your property regardless if it is driven or not. I just thought I would throw that in case the future question comes up.

And finally, you're damn right it is a revenue generator. Unlike the private sector where funds are generated by sales, Cities and Villages work on the premise of a taxing body. For those that think this economy is not effecting your local government, think again. Taxable income to a local government only goes so far. I feel sorry for civilian positions within a policing agency within the next 2 -3 years if this economic downturn continues.
