Need Ins / owning a car requires insurance?

I need to find insurance. State Farm finally screwed me over and I'm done.
I'm not working so I don't have car insurance. I'm not driving my car and my cars registration isn't even current. They're telling me that Illinois requires me to keep car insurance just because I own it. Doesn't matter if it's registered or operated. That true? So now they won't restart my policy.

If anyone does home and auto insurance, let me know. SF has been good to me when times were good. Now that times are tough, they say go away. Great service. I've only used them my whole life. They've slowly screwed each of my family over the years and driven them away and I guess now it's my turn to take it and move on.

Sorry. Rant over.

do you own the car outright? or are you still paying on it?

if you have an outstanding loan, you need to have some type of insurance on it per the lender. if it's parked and you own it outright and you are not driving it, you don't have to have insurance. My buddy has 2 cars at his house, used for racing, that are titled to him and were previously licensed/registered for street use, but will never see that as they are not street legal anymore. they have no insurance on them.

you are not required to keep current registration on a car, however most places will require it under ordinance that it be registered if its visible from the road.

people own race cars all the time with no reg's
there may be back registration assesed if you dont keep it current, and i know that you need to prove insurance for registration now.

Northlake is like that. I got a ticket at my shop a few years ago for an old truck I was getting rid of, and luckily I am a dealer so I got it dropped, but I still had to go to court and argue about it. Toolbags were gonna try to stick me with it, until I asked if all of Al Piemonte's cars were registered on his lot too.

You do not need insurance if the car is on your property. There is no back regestration on cars but lets say your licesne plate expires in jan 09 and you want to get a new sticker for it in dec 2010. that sticker would still expire at the end of dec 2010. but If you waited a full year you have to get new license plates and the new plates expire one year from when you get them.

I waited over a year to get a new sticker and had to get new plates.

You don't need insurance on the car for the state, but you you do need to keep it current with State Farm or they will drop you. Then you will have to have another major insurance for a year before you can get coverage with them.

They want the insurance on there because to many people are driving without insurance.

I would just put the old policy number on there. sometimes they even dont' ask at the DMV or currency exchange.

State farm did this to my g/f. Her ride was broke and on cinder blocks for couple months, and she didn't pay her insurance. So they wanted to give her the same rate as a 16 year old. And shes been with them for .......... years. so like 800 extra a year, because she wasn't driving or paying insurance.

I guess they worked with her on it. so iz dont know, but thats BS

Yes you need insurance but not on the cars you can legally park them and not have insurance on them. You need non drivers insurance it's IL state law if you have a license you have to have insurance on either a car or you.

I think I'm finding it out the hard way now, and I'm getting a headache.

For what it's worth:
Quote:
Sec. 7‑601. Required liability insurance policy.

(a) No person shall operate, register or maintain registration of, and no owner shall permit another person to operate, register or maintain registration of, a motor vehicle designed to be used on a public highway unless the motor vehicle is covered by a liability insurance policy.

(b) The following vehicles are exempt from the requirements of this Section:
. . . . .
(7) inoperable or stored vehicles that are not operated, as defined by rules and regulations of the Secretary.
(625 ILCS 5/7-601)
No mention of "non-driver's insurance," and I'd be interested to hear the details of how you found out otherwise.

I was arrested for no proof of insurance by a hard ass cop and got further reamed by a back water McHenry judge who informed me of the law. I then proceeded to show that I was insured at the time of the arrest but it didn't stop this judge from going off.

So if you own no car, you have ins. on what? Say you drive a truck for a living. The truck owner provider ins. you now need additional ins on yourself?
If this is true, it sounds like some bullshit cooked up by the ins. cos. to add to their bottom line.

that makes no sense
you *basically* need a drivers license just for identification purposes anymore.. Everyone (almost) has one..

In the city many people have drivers licenses but they do not have cars.. So they don't have car insurance.. Are you saying you need to carry car insurance if you do not own a car?

That makes no sense

Almost everyone I know in the city has a drivers license.. and I'd say around half of them own cars..
Of that half.. I don't think a single one who doesn't own a car carries car insurance just because they have a drivers license.

I think stumbl1 misunderstood.. or.. we all are misunderstanding the other way.

I thought you had to have a car to carry car insurance. Also in general the car insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver (obviously there can be clauses and exceptions) -- for example - if I drive my brothers car "his" car insurance covers it - not my own.

There's a world of difference between getting busted for driving without insurance, and getting busted for storing a car without insurance. I'm assuming, of course, that you were driving something to get arrested, and that the cop wasn't so much of a hard-ass as to just bust you while you were mowing the lawn or something.

How did you prove that you had insurance? Did you show your personal insurance card, or the one that went with the car? Was it a family car--and if so, were you on the policy?

I don't want to ream you out any worse than the judge did, but as always the devil's in the details with something like this.

I just didn't have my insurance card at the time for my car.

the judge just happen to mention the non drivers insurance in his rant.

My understanding of the non drivers insurance is it is used mainly for instances when owner has a vehicle that restricts who is covered to drive it and for people who owe money on cars they don't drive but are required to have insurance.

I brought it up because it could very well apply to OP subject.

I have suspended coverage on a car I don't regularly drive on SF. I did get comprehension on it since it wasn't covered if it got stolen. I do have my other car fully insured though so I may be a bad example.

Talk to other companies and ask about this. Maybe you just need a new agent.
