29 no-nos for gamers over age 30

Old people with nintendo revolution controllers in handThe ESA says that the average gamer is 30 years old. It’s time that those of us who are 30 or older realize that some of the things we grew up doing as gamers are no longer really appropriate, cool, or kosher given our new demographic bucket. Here, then, is a helpful guide to 28 things a gamer should never do past the age of 30.

1. Participate in LAN parties with minors
2. Quit your job to pursue a pro-gaming career
3. Start a Star Wars themed PC case mod in the living room
4. Ever use the jargon OMG, BBQ and WTF together in the same phrase
5. Pirate games - shouldn’t you have an income by now?
6. Find the idea of teamkilling funny
7. Choose a female avatar so that you can try to upskirt her
8. Refuse to play games that are rated lower than mature
9. Tea-bag a downed opponent in Halo 2
10. Play any game with Princess Toadstool in it
11. Choose a gamer handle including any form of the words “hell,” “killer,” “death,” or ”-inator”
12. Yell “pwnt” in a public virtual space
13. Play a female character in an MMOG in order to troll for “Crying Game” victims
14. Disconnect when losing at Starcraft or any other RTS
15. Ninja loot
16. Get your gaming news from a print publication
17. Replace the letter S with a dollar sign when writing Microsoft, Sony, or PlayStation
18. Live in your parents’ basement to support a gaming habit
19. Break mice in a fit of rage after being served in an FPS game
20. Try to win an argument in a gaming forum
21. Pretend that movies like Doom and Tomb Raider are anything but crap
22. Carry softcore anime porn on your PSP to show the guys at work
23. Hadoken someone as a greeting, complete with hand motions and sound effects
24. Play competitively against anyone under the age of 10
25. Read or write fanfiction
26. Yell or type, “Laggg” when losing an online game
27. Bogart the controller
28. Work at GameStop “just for the discount”
29. Type liek JeffK

I know nothing about 6, 9, 12, 15, or 29. I'm on the lower end of that spectrum. Can somebody fill me in?

Funny though, gives merit to "playing" instead of "living in" games.

6 is when you kill your own team just to be a jerk.

9 is when you get over a guy you just killed and crouch up and down on his face, effectively "tea-bagging" him. Good thing I'm only 25 because I still enjoy tea-bagging ish talkers

12 is yelling "OWNED!" after you kill someone.

No clue what 15 is myself.

I believe 29 is an inside joke on the board.

6. Find the idea of teamkilling funny
(Some team games, Counter Strike for example, you can actually kill someone on your team, sometimes it can be funny.)
9. Tea-bag a downed opponent in Halo 2

12. Yell “pwnt” in a public virtual space

I know all of the stuff on the list because I'm constantly exposed to it. I really despise guys that perpetuate the stereotype that computer guys are losers. (This isn't a slam to you)

Hell, I even blogged about this issue (which is ironic in itself, I know) http://www.pjhyett.com/articles/2005...-you-star-wars

From my experience, when you ninja loot you are taking items off a body that cannot be given to anyone else, and your group didn't want you to, or taking them and not sharing if somene else "needs."

And on the topic of computer nerds, who cares. I can be one at times, shoot, I knew all of that besides 29. I'm exposed to crap that makes me as a teenager looks worse, i.e. tramp stamps, disrespectful kids, all that. When it all comes down to it, I don't care. If people aren't willing to give me the time and figure out who I am on their own, they can bite me. If you think I'm a loser, then go ahead and think it, but it just goes to show how idiotic you can be, generalizing.

There's good and bad in everything, don't associate everyone with the bad.

Exactly,

As long as personal hygene is not being compromised, I can care less what your addiction is. I have never really gotten into D&D but I have friends that are Dungeon Masters from back in the day and loved that... but some of them could probably rip your guts apart in real life and you would never guess that they are into it.

We here are all bike geeks to certains extent, some more than others... like if Rick was into computer games he will be calling everyone a Noob and telling them how you run faster with the knife... he will totally be FPSDoug, LMAO.

P.J. I know you were not trying to call me directly a loser, but I know a lot of people that are really into computers and videogames as a hobbie and believe me they are far from losers, not every gamer lives in their parents basement... that is just wrong to stereotype now a days. Is like the whole Harley Riders think that all sportbike riders are squids on rockets or viceversa that they are all ride to the next bar to get tanked.

My playstation has an inch of dust on it and the only game in my computer is solitare And I have no idea what all of this numbers and letters shit is, that supposedly is some language that I can only assume is decoded on the back of a some pocket protector.

When I was younger I was into it and following the culture, Hell I remeber needing a boot disc on my 486 50mhz machine to play leisure suit larry back in the day. But I lost touch once I turned 19, got my fake ID and left the house for more favorable pursuits

#15. Ninja loot

Ninja looting is done in multi-player role playing games (think, Everquest, World of Warcraft... etc). When a monster dies, they drop items. If you're in a group and a monster dies and you grab an item without the approval of the group, then disappear (go linkdead, transport to another location), you're guilty of ninja looting. It's considered VERY poor taste, and will frequently prevent you from ever getting another group. Items that are ninja looted range from easy to get spells, to items worth hundreds of US Dollars on e-bay.

Yea, you can get a lot of money for good acounts, rare items, etc. There is a guy I work with that has been playing UO for 8 years. You would never guess either, he is an ubber jock and he sells stuff online. He is a beast master - animal trainner (I don't play that game) and has sold rare dragos or something called riyus for mula, like 100's... it is not worth it to me, but for some other people...

http://listings.ebay.com/Internet-Ga...istingItemList

Also the dude fatal1ty (best known FPS player) has his own company now and is making tons of money, some prices in tournaments are in the 10s of thousands.
