new to chitown

Hey there everyone!

New to the area, and somewhat newer to riding (been riding a year). Moved from Grand Rapids, MI this last autumn for work, and didn't take my bike with me because of the fast approaching winter. I'm currently selling my 09 ZX-6R after riding it 6000 miles during April-September. I'll be buying my buddy's 08 ZX-10R (bike I learned on).

I'm hoping to bring it down from Michigan in April. I live in Hyde Park (right next to Lake Shore Drive) and heard riders often in autumn riding down late at night (was painful listening knowing my bike was up in MI)

I'll have to see what events go on this summer, I love riding!

I know there's no helmet law (I noticed this in insurance prices, which is a change from Michigan, but I definitely plan to wear my gear 24/7), I follow Illinois ABATE of Illinois on Facebook, got a quote on my bike from State Farm. Just need a good place to park it around Hyde Park. Any ideas? Any pointers on owning/riding around these parts?

EDIT: I already transferred my MI cycle endorsement and have taken an MSF class last summer)

My current bike (last April) and my future bike ZX-10R on the right:

Nice bikes. Yeah I am sure you heard some of us flying down LSD. Welcome to Chicago. Was in Grand Rapids a couple of weeks ago at the B.O.B. and had a blast there!

Ah- good stuff!

Anyone know of a decent place to park my bike? I live in Hyde Park (as indicated) and work at Two Pru downtown. I'd like a secure garage somewhere but have no leads (and I don't have a ton of spare cash laying around)

Either one, prefer closer to Hyde Park, but let's be frank- not a ton of secure options. Downtown wouldn't be a problem- could just take a 15 minute bus to grab my bike. I've look extensively on Chicago's website that shows lower motorcycle rates, but still, just trying to find more options.

Hrm, that would explain a lot, but no

I work in Michigan Plaza, right across from you. I drove to work and saw a few bikes in the garage I parked in. I also see a few bikes parked on the corner under the bridge on South Water. Well, hope you can find a secure spot

Welcome.

Find the local Hyde Park neighborhood paper and look for "Garage for rent" ads. Also, if there are apartment building garages near you, talk to the head maintenance guy or the manager about renting a garage spot for the bike. These garages often have spaces smaller than a car can fit in that are perfect for a bike, and represent extra revenue for the landlord or condo association. (I did this when I lived in the Bronx, and it kept my bike safe from thieves). Another option is to find a place that's easy to get to from your place by public transport, and rent a garage space out there. If you are close to the Illinois Central (Metra Electric) line, that goes out to places like Blue Island and the south suburbs where there will be more options and cheaper rents.
