The bike is 100% new just like me lol
I am 20 years old, do you need to take the course if you are under 21?
I also have all insurance paid for and plates and registration, everything is done besides the license.

Where can i ride without my license to practice ? or do i need to get my permit first from the DMV?
I know how to ride a dirt bike, my sport bike is much like that. But i am new to the sport bike and am getting to know it

I believe if you go take the writen part they will give you a permit.

I'm not certain of the new rules as i took my test 30yrs ago.

But I think the class maybe required under 18 or 21

The class is just a good idea .people on this site can help with that.

PM Kegger.

take the written at the dmv, youre over 18 so no restrictions there. that get you a permit

taking an MSF course is a good idea but it is not mandatory. get familiar with your bike and comfortable on it riding, the DMV test is all tight maneuvering stuff at bout parking lot speeed, the only exception is the emergency stop test, you have to get up to like 30 for that then after crossing a line stop as fast as possible with out dropping it.

Hi and welcome

Get your permit. With a permit you only can ride with someone who have their M license. Pass the four course tests at the DMV and you can get your license. Parking lot is your friend. OR you can go through the MSF course or other riding schools like Ride Chicago like I did. However, MSF is the free one

class is required if you are under 18 and its over a certain cc that required an M class. like 175 or something. with a permit you can ride along with a licensed rider i think. just remember easy on the rear brake on the street. actually u dont need it at all. thats the main adjustment coming off the dirt.

also when you think you are close to ready u can go to the dmv and practice the course for the bike test. not all the shit is laid out since they put cones for the actual test but some of the stuff is. its really easy anyway. btw pick up a motorcycle rules of the road at your village hall or police station or dmv. that will answer all your questions. you can if you choose, just do the msf course and you get the licence cert at completion. take your time and get used to cars constantly not seeing you and near accidents every ride. you get used to it and anticipate after a bit and it becomes more comical than scary. good luck.

Go check out www.niu.edu/mcycle

100% free class and they have a bunch of locations. You use their bike and if you pass, it waives your riding and written.

They've had a bunch of spots open, so go to one of their locations as a walkin. Make sure you're there by 5:30 Friday evening and chances are you'll get in.

I rode by CLC today, they had plenty of spots open this weekend, I know the same is true for many of other locations. They'll teach you how its done rather than learning the hard way on your own and possibly getting yourself in trouble. You've already been riding dirt so it'll be a piece of cake.

Do yourself a favor, sign up or walk-in for an MSF class one of these weekends so you dont end up a statistic. I promise you it will be beneficial. Do it.

Do this and you can take your license test on their bikes. Much better to learn the right way, than teach yourself what you don't know.

Learn at your own pace, don't be afraid to ask questions and ride with responsible people that know you're new to the road. ...and never feel like you have to ride over your head to keep up with anyone. Stay in your comfort zone, keep your head up and your eyes moving and enjoy!

Thanks, went out on my first ride today. Completely amazing. All good fun, learned a lot. Also I ride just fine for a newbie. I shift just fine, downshift towards lights and stop signs. Found the sweet spot on the clutch for my bike. Me and her are getting to know each other very well.

Good things!

Just remember, it takes time for all of those things (shifting, braking, signaling, etc) to become second nature...until then, those all take focus away from where it 100% will ultimately lie, scanning the road, reading the behavior of drivers and predicting danger zones. So take it slow, check that confidence(!) and try and steer clear of high traffic times and places.

Motorcycles can offer some of the very best physical, mental, social therapy and enjoyment you'll find anywhere...but they bite, and they bite hard. Always keep that in the back of your mind and you'll take one of the biggest steps any motorcyclist needs to make right from the get go.

I would do a walk-in for the MSF course ...... you get to take the riding test on their bike which will prevent any little "learning mistakes" from scratching your bike up !

normally it will be in the social gatherings section, it looks like its supposed to rain tonight though so at least in my case I wont be posting up the meeting, hopefully next week brings dry weather for weds.

for next week probably gonna try and go up to the tilted kilt in vernon hills, theres a club up there that has a pretty big turnout on the 1st and 3rd weds of the month, went there last week but only stayed about 1 minute cause we took a chance on the rain and lost, we left trying to outrun the storm and lost ended up pulling into a gas station maybe 2 miles down the road... my bike is still filthy from that
