Obtaining Title with only a Bill of Sale in IL?

I tried the search feature, but could find anything on this subject.

There are quite a few bikes around with "lost titles". If a VIN# comes up clean and I have a bill of sale, can I obtain a clean title under "Duplicate Title"?

Has anyone here done this? Process? Experience? Cost? I read you can get a Vermont license plate with a bill of sale, but that doesn't solve for the title and registration piece for IL.

Thanks

It's an old post/thread, but maybe this will help. I did a lot of searching back when I had a few YSRs without titles and this was about the most helpful thing I could find.

With that said, I ended up selling the bikes before I ever bothered trying to get titles.

Really helpful, thanks YSR50! I'll see if I can get the local PD to run the VIN# to confirm "not stolen" before I even check out the bike. Only other thing would be whether a lien is on the bike from a bank, which I doubt, since it's 13+ years old. Then it sounds like I am off to the DuPage County Court House if I do decide to buy it.

There aren't a ton of bikes for sale on this forum. Where is the best place to get realistic pricing on 600-1000cc sport bikes from the early 2000's? CL seems to be way overpriced or full of scammers with pics of palm tress in the background.

Thanks!

Thanks for the info! From what I could find, I need to apply for a Duplicate Title through the Secretary of State's office in Springfield and provide proof that I own the bike (assuming VIN# is clear and not a stolen bike - need to confirm through local PD before purchasing a bike). I still need to check which form is required, but I'm guessing either a Sellers Report of Sale and/or Odometer Disclosure Statement, both available on the site.

@Stanimal - let me know if you've had better luck with any specific form/proof of purchase (ie. Sellers Report of Sale or other documentation). Thanks!

Thanks!

I bought my 2002 Speed Triple with 2,200 miles on it for $2,100 in November. It needed a little cleaning up, but nothing major.

Many "lost title" sales, especially of street bikes (as opposed to track only bikes) are bikes where someone has absconded on the loan (which won't show up as stolen, but will show a lein on the title), or are stolen bikes that have been moved from state to state.

Good luck in your quest for a duplicate title. Maybe your seller is legit.

Craig

You may have more problems than you realize when you buy a bike with no title. Probably why there are so many bikes without them. If it was easy to get, everybody would have a title. Duplicate titles will just go to the registered owner, which is not you, it's the guy you got the bike from, or previous owners depending on how many times title has jumped. No need to reinvent the wheel. Buy a bike with a title, and don't buy bikes without titles. It's not worth the hassle. I've been jumping through the state hoops for almost half a year now with 5 mechanic liens right now. They are not quick, intelligent, correct, nor compassionate. Nobody there cares whether you get a title or not.

Is there an actual FB group or are all the lonely housewives from here just sharing and poking each other randomly over there?
