Hawks trade Byfuglien, Eager and Sopel

Boo! I was hoping they were going to trade Versteeg and Sopel, then send Huey to Rockford, which they will probably still do. Guess my Eager jersey is now a collectors item

On a positive note, Keith won the Norris Trophy

The Chicago Blackhawks made a blockbuster trade with the Thrashers on Wednesday, the Stanley Cup champions moving Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and a prospect to Atlanta for a first-round pick, a second-round pick, prospect Jeremy Morin and veteran forward Marty Reasoner, a source told ESPN.com.

ESPN 1000, Chicago

Former Hawks winger Dustin Byfuglien was surprised to learn of his trade to Atlanta during an interview on Wednesday with the Afternoon Saloon.

More Podcasts

The first- and second-round picks that Chicago gets in the deal were acquired by Atlanta in the trade that sent Ilya Kovalchuk to New Jersey last February.

The prospect Atlanta is getting from Chicago is Akim Aliu.

The deal is pending a call to the league for approval. The Blackhawks have not confirmed the trade.

"It is what it is," Byfuglien said on "The Afternoon Saloon" on ESPN 1000. "It's part of the job. You're not going to stick in one spot the whole time so I've got to go."

The Blackhawks were in dire need to get rid of salary as new contract extensions for Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith next season put them in a major salary-cap crunch. The Hawks save just over $5 million in cap space with the trade.

Byfuglien has one year left on his contract paying him $3 million, which is also his cap hit. Sopel has one year left on his deal at $2 million although his cap hit is $2.3 million. Eager is a restricted free agent who earned $965,000 this past season, so retaining his rights would have cost at least that much. The only salary the Hawks get back is Reasoner, who has one more year left on his contract at $1.2 million and his cap hit is $1.15 million.

The Hawks will still have decisions to make on whether to keep the relatively high salaries of forwards Patrick Sharp and Kris Versteeg.

Byfuglien was a major force in the Hawks' run to the Cup, switching from defense to forward to fill needs with the team. His work in front of the net was a big part of dispatching the Canucks and Sharks in the postseason.

He battled Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger continuously in the Cup finals. He broke through with two goals and two assists in Game 5.

Byfuglien finished with 17 goals and 17 assists in the 2009-10 regular season. He had a career-high 19 goals in 2007-08. Eager posted seven goals and nine assists in 60 games. Sopel was only a plus-3 for the season but was a big part of the Hawks' penalty kill, especially late in the regular season and the playoffs.

Reasoner had four goals and 13 assists, his 11th season in the league.

$ grasshopper. It's all about the $. It would have been great to keep everyone from this years championship. But there was no way it was going to happen with all the high salarys. We may still have to get rid of 2 more people. It's that close because of the $ cap. This totally sucks, but it's been expected since before the finals started. It's been the talk really heavily this last week. I hate that we have to break up the team. I mean we just won the championship just 2 weeks ago today.

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

again, they had to dump salaries. There is a salary cap in the NHL. There was no option so to blame it on anything else is dumb. Who they traded is fair to discuss - but the fact that they're gone is dumb.

This was really a good move IMO...they have to dump salary to lock up Sharp and Niemi...neither Sopel or Eager are major losses and you got as much for Buff as you're likely to ever get. They moved him at his highest value.

If this move clears space to lock up those two and get some value in return (a veteran center to replace Madden, a good prospect and a draft pick) then that's probably as good as this deal could get.

And you want to lock up Sharp? He missed so many empty nets and played like crap half the season.

I'd much rather get rid of Sharp than Buff.

What does Sharp make, maybe a million more than Buff? ...and he's a MUCH better all around player. There's a reason he's got a letter on his jersey.

I love Buff, but he's a role player, and an inconsistent one at that.

They had different roles though. You think Sharp could have kept Pronger in check during the finals?

Yeah, one's a role player and the other is one of the key guys on the whole team! ...and Buff hardly kept Pronger in check, he owned him for the first part of the series. Look, I like Buff...nothing against the guy, but there is simply no comparison between the two players.

ok ill jump in again. skill wise no comparison. sharp is a much better skater and a more skilled passer and a more proven goal scorer. so what else is there? the hawks were so successful in the 80's based on their board work - keeping the puck in and buff excels at this. and presence in front of the net is huge in the playoffs - luongo is an incredible goalie but buff just gets to him. the wings have thrived for years with holmstrom's presence in the crease. they dont keep stats for things like this.

but since we're talking stats:

playoff hits:

buff 99
sharp 26

Ha, well yeah if you're looking for hits.

...I'd say the +/- pretty well takes care of all the things there "aren't stats for"...Sharp destroys Buff in that category, along with pretty much everywhere else
