Finally! Ron Santo to Hall of Fame

I believe both Cubs and Sox fans can agree on this...This was LONG overdue!
Ron Played his entire major league career in Chicago...mostly on the Northside but he capped off his career with a short stint on 35th street. He loved this city and its fans and I am very happy to see him go in the Hall.
I also have some very bittersweet feelings about the timing of this...He had the stats... the number of RBI's he had and the 5 Gold Gloves should have been enough to qualify him alone! Why does this come almost a year to the day after his death?
Anyone feel the same way?

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

If you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. To anger a liberal all one must do is tell the truth!

I saw this today as well. After he was passed up a couple of times I said jokingly that he wouldn't be inducted until he died. I guess I was more right than I thought.

One of my favorite times going to a cubs game was sitting in the upper deck right by the media booth, we got there early and the chick I took was complaining about climbing the ramps. Ron Santo comes up the ramp on a "gator" about 10 min later and she says to me, "Why did he get a ride and I had to walk?". I calmly turn to her and say, "Because he has no damn legs". I've never seen her shut up so quickly.

Lord, beer me strength

It's been a long road, but he's finally in...and deservedly so. Anyone that puts his statistics in to context for his position and the time in which he played knows full well that he's a hall of famer. The bottom line I think is that many folks simply did not want a team with 4 inductees that failed to win a world series.

Congrats Ron.

Pete Rose will be the next to go through this I think. They should just shut the place down until he's in.

Well I guess I am not the majority. I don't think he is worthy of going to the HOF.

Santo had been consistently ranked among the top 100 players of all time by the Baseball Encyclopedia and in their top 10 all time 3rd basemen. There are currently 295 players in the HOF. Simple math!

Thats fine, but there is a reason he wasn't voted in all these years. Its a sympathy vote in is all I am saying.

I think for whatever reason Ron ticked some people with votes off...enough of them to keep him out. The same goes for Rose. As soon as he's gone, as soon as it's not personal anymore, the numbers will again take over and he'll get in too...as he should.

I'm listening to the Score now, Boers is making the ridiculous argument that the Cubs team of that era shouldn't have 4 HOF members...never understood that.

EDIT: The Score is already off...I rarely make it past 2pm anymore

I would say that there is a case to be made that in spite of his numbers, Pete Rose doesn't deserve to be in the hall. That being said, I think he will eventually be elected to the hall after he passes away strictly on his numbers. But, holding Ron Santo back was about him being an "in your face" player who didn't play on a winner...with some voters it was a personal dislike for Ron because he played hard and was very sure of himself in spite of his teams record ...Pete Rose actually defamed the game with his conduct.

Anyone who thinks Ron Santo doesn't deserve to be in the hall needs to consider that even if he didn't have HOF numbers (which he did) he should have gone in as a broadcaster in the media section... His "color" over the years on WGN was classic and ranks right up there with the best. I enjoyed listening to Ron much more than Harry Carey...at least Ron was paying attention to the game!

Yep, there's certainly a difference between the two in "why" the voters kept them out, but I was just saying that their numbers were good enough, it's personal reasons they weren't in sooner.

Charlie Hustle as a "player" deserves to be in - The actions of Pete Rose and the black eye he gave baseball (he just got caught doing it) should keep him out

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming WOW, what a RIDE !!"

Sorry for turning this in to a Pete Rose thread...you know if the guy would have just admitted that he acted in extremely poor judgment and blatantly violated golden rules of the game he'd already be in. It's been his behavior since then that's kept the guy with the most damn hits in baseball history out of the HOF.

Wow, two "Kenny Roger's Roasters" references in the past 30 minutes. (other was lyric in an Electric Six song I just heard on Spotify.) Weird.
