Cubs Opener

Picking up right where they left off.

I'm sorry, but pulling a guy with two outs in the eighth, a 1-0 lead...a guy that gave up a hit on the very first pitch, then proceeded to go 8 2/3 with 2 walks, 10 strikeouts and no hits...pulling that guy after a rinky dink single in the eight inning?? Idiocy.

Pitch counts are the worst thing to happen to baseball in the past 30 years.

Wasted a great start against one of the premier pitchers in the league (although he is coming off TJ surgery). Typical performance of the Cubs.

My name is JB, people call me JB

I just can't understand taking a starter out of a game like that, 1-0, they way he was dominating. I couldn't care less if it's opening day...it counts just as much as any other game...maybe moreso because it can set a tone.

If the game was 4-3 I could understand...but 1-0, 108 pitches? You've got to be kidding me. They did it to themselves. Ask anyone that's played baseball...pulling a guy that's been whipping your ass for 8+ innings give you immediate hope.

I agree...He should have at least been allowed to retire the side! But, baseball is all about the stats...and Dempster does not have a very good record facing the hitter he was pulled away from....Imagine what it would have done for his confidence if he had retired him!

Woodie's performance was poor...he should have better control coming out of Spring training...But it's Marmol that concerns me the most...closer my ARSE!

Yeah Marmol has been a pipe dream from day 1 in my opinion. Great stuff is only great if you can control it. Marmol has never been able to do that. The guy is way too inconsistent to be a reliable closer.

How many times has the Cub bullpen screwed Dempster out of a win? LEAVE HIM IN THE DAMN GAME!! With a 1-0 score, that's his game to lose, period.

I'm on record here and now...The Cubs WILL have more wins at season's end than the White Sox...The reason I'm sure of this is there is much more turmoil and uncertainty on the South side...If the Cubs gel they could approach .500.
It's pretty obvious that the Sox are going to have a much harder time coming together as a team this season.
That said...I'm realistic and honest...there is no sport more unpredictable or fickle than baseball but, I will stand by my prediction to the end.
One other prediction...neither team will compete for even a wild card...they'll play 162 and be done...Both sides of town will be waiting 'til next year!

PS...At least the Cubs play BASEBALL...not that watered down version of girls fast pitch softball with a DH that they call the "American" League! Ain't nothin' American about it!

Ill take that bet. and say the sox atleast do a wildcard. And for you last comment WAT! only team in baseball where they blame a goat for a loss and are almost sued by their own fans because of a sheet blocking some rooftop views pathetic sounds like a bunch of crying yuppies to me

Who said anything about a bet...just a prediction.

The only ones who ever talked sueing the Cubs (Sam Zell Tribune Co. at the time, the current owners EMBRACE the rooftops) were SOX FANS! (< true story!)

NO TRUE CUB FAN HAS EVER BLAMED THE GOAT! WE DON"T BELIEVE IN CURSES! If we believed in curses we wouldn't believe in the CUBS!

Talk about pathetic baseball fans...The White Sox...THE only team to EVER deliberately tank the World Series and they didn't even have the decency do it for Chicago gangsters..They did it for a LOUSY NEW YORK GAMBLER/bootlegger. If there were a such thing as curses the WhiteSox would be the most cursed team in Baseball!
Did you know?...... The DH idea was invented so the girls fastpitch softball league teams could take the pressure off their best pitchers to hit so they could better concentrate on pitching during their time of the month?...It got picked up and suggested into the bigs by the players association with the purpose of adding dues paying membership to the union and to extend aging players careers (more dues paying)...ONLY the AMERICAN league fell for it...They are still actually playing REAL HARDBALL BASEBALL in the NATIONAL LEAGUE ONLY!

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

Really? What makes this so? The sox 5 new roster players? Or the Cubs 11 new roster players? The Sox new Mgr? Or the Cubs new MGR, GM, President and half of their front office?

FFS the cubs have a starting pitcher who I went yard on.

You don't judge a pitcher's condition by the number of pitches. You judge by his delivery and his ball placement within the strike zone. As soon as a guy starts to stand up during his drive forward and the ball starts to come up in the strike zone, he's starting to get fatigued...when you stand up you start using your arm more than your body, that's how injuries happen.

Pitch counts are a joke. They've only become commonly used after the salaries sky rocketed and the media scrutiny on managers tightened. Somehow, "100" was determined to be some magical number.

Man, in today's game Sandy Koufax would have never finished a single season

you don't ONLY judge a pitchers level of fatigue by number of pitches. Just like you don't ONLY judge his level of fatigue by the drive. Some pitchers stand taller all the time. So drive even more when they are tiring, some you can't tell a difference in their mechanics. There is a lot more that goes into it than one could put in a single post on a web forum.

It still comes down to a pitcher on opening day should not be pushed as far as a pitcher through the middle or stretch run of a season. Pushing too hard too early could lead to problems down the road.

And just because Sandy Koufax did something doesn't mean it was the smartest thing in the world. He did some extrordinary things but his delivery also ended his carrer and he would have had Tommy John like 4 times if he pitched today.

Living and Dying by 1 out on opening day is what I love about you guys.

Ryan Dempster showed ZERO signs of fatigue in that game. After giving up a hit on the very first pitch of the game he went 7 2/3 innings of hitless baseball with 2 walks and ten strike outs. He gave up a dink single and was pulled from a game he was completely dominating based solely on pitch count. Just as you don't judge a pitcher solely on pitch count, as you say, you don't make decisions based solely on time of year.

If it was a 4-3 ball game, fine...but a 1-0 game...I don't care what game of the year it is you don't pull that pitcher when he's still at the top of his game. They lost because of that decision.

I can go all day long on pitching my man. All day.

Indeed.

I'll say this about Wrigley, regardless of the incompetence infecting the field of play, there's generally some "nice scenery" at the park to enjoy while having a beer...
