Bears-Bills Second Half Update

Night and Day! The Bears win 16-12!

Kyle Orton started the second half. He played two series, one a 3 and out and the other a 79 yard 6:19 minute that resulted in a TD to Desmond Clark after Muhammad dropped a TD pass earlier in the drive. He looked comfortable and poised in the pocket. His delivery was crisp and quick. His decisions were much better than in previous games. It's pretty clear that Orton is a special player and he has made a clear case for the starting job. The fact that Hutchinson managed the impossible by playing worse than he did last week only solidifies the decision to play Orton.

Another standout player was Mark Bradley. He ran very crisp routes and made some tough catches in traffic. He is also making a strong case to crack the starting line up. Justin Gage played an average game with one critical drop and a few decent catches on the Orton TD drive. The absent WR tonight was Bernard Berrian. He was a non-factor the entire game and did poorly returning punts and kicks.

Adrian Peterson continued to eat up second and third string defenses. He scored the game winning TD with 1:32 left in the game. He is so good on special teams that his ability to be a decent backup RB is an added bonus. Speaking of special teams, the Bears looked especially sloppy in that area failing to have good returns and missing lanes on coverage.. 6 holding penalties returning kicks is baffling and unacceptable. Penalties in general were a problem for the Bears all night.

The first string defense played one series in the third quarter and gave up a field goal. The looked somewhate tired to start and the drive was keyed by a good run to the outside by MacGahee. However the buckled down and held them to three.

For JoJo, Kittner looked 10x better than Hutchinson. He wasn't overly impressive but he made some good deliveries and took care of the football. I would say he played the second best game of all the Bears QBs. If Hutchinson is cut then Kittner has a solid chance to be the third QB on the roster. Right now I would set my depth chart as Orton, Blake, Kittner if I was Lovie Smith, but its unlikely that Hutchinson will be released after two preseason games.
