Bears vs. Lions Recap
The Bears go on the road and win 19-13 in OT against the Lions to take over first place in the NFC North! Detroit played very well today with Garcia taking good care of the football. Three wins in a row, a tough division win on the road and the offense starting to click all points towards a playoff team in a weak division!
On offense, the Bears looked very good in the first half going into the break with a 13-3 lead. Kyle Orton connected with Muhammed on a 23 yard TD pass to cap a 99 yard scoring drive. Mark Bradley also had two big plays early in the game to set up FG's. He left the game with what looks to be a knee injury in the second quarter with 5 catches and 88 yards. His loss will be felt as the offense really seemed to go downhill quickly after his exit. Thomas Jones also left the game with a rib injury although it is not known how serious. Cedric Benson played in the OT period and ran for 35 yards on only 3 carries. Overall, the offense looked much better than they did against the Ravens last week. Today's game also showed just how badly the Bears need a legitimate threat at the no. 2 receiver position.
On defense, the Bears played a great game all four quarters. Garcia was running the offense very well and the Bears still held them to 13 points. Charles Tillman capped an excellent all around day with an INT for a TD to win the game in OT. The only area of concern for the Bears D is they still seem to be vulnerable over the middle if the rush doesn't get to the QB quickly. Although Detroit is not regarded as an offensive powerhouse, they were playing exceptionally well today and were still unable to move the ball consistently on the Bears D.
Overall, the Bears went on the road and won a game against a tough opponent on a day when they were not getting any breaks. They should feel really good about today's game because they played their hearts out and didn't wear down. With the Packers and Vikings losing again today, it's starting to look like the Bears could finish with a winning record and a playoff berth if they can just keep playing at this level. I doubt they play this well the rest of the year but if the offense keeps improving and they avoid more injuries, sweeping the NFC North is a definate possibility!
