Belated Bears vs. 49ers Recap

The Bears recovered from a subpar outing last week with a 41-10 drubbing of the San Francisco 49ers yesterday at Soldier Field. This game was over early as the Bears scored 24 points in the first quarter with the help of 3 turnovers. Lovie called off the dogs after the first half and played the second and third stringers all of the fourth quarter. The 49ers 10 points all came in garbage time of the fourth quarter against mostly reserve players. The Bears streak of dominating teams at home continues and with the hapless Dolphins in town next week, there is a good chance it will still be intact next week as well.

ON OFFENSE:
Rex Grossman looked sharp today completing 23/29 for 252 yards 3TDs and 0 INTS. Actually, the Bears didn't turn the ball over once the whole game. Rex was finding the open receivers and delivering sharp passes. The 49ers defense is probably the worst in the league and didn't do much to make his job difficult. The OL provided great protection and the receivers were running pretty good routes as well. Des Clark continued his hot year leading the Bears with 6 catches for 86 yards and 2 TDs. Moose got a nice 5 yard TD pass in back of the end zone and had a sweet 27 yarder in the second quarter. Berrian had a somewhat quiet day getting 5 balls for 41 yards but failing to score. Rex needed a confidence builder after last week and he sure got it today.

Thomas Jones put up 111 yards and 1 TD on 23 attempts. He continues to dance way too much but his TD run came on a nice 7 yard reverse of direction run. Lovie and Turner had planned to get Cedric Benson more action today but for some reason he only got 8 carries for 26 yards and a 1 yard TD jump over the line "slightly" reminiscent of the great Walter Payton leaps of old.

The main point is the offense played so well that the game was over by half time. The second half was just killing time as Lovie has too much class to run up the score against a weaker opponent. The 49ers D stinks so it's not too surprising the Bears were able to score at will.

ON DEFENSE:
The 49ers tried to protect Alex Smith by running the ball and throwing all quick 3 step drops most of the game. It didnt produce offense but it did limit the Bears to 2 sacks and 1 INT. Mark Anderson continues his hot streak with a nice sack and forced fumble to end the game. Ogunleye added the other sack in the second quarter.

Brian Urlacher had an amazing tipped pass to himself for an INT in the first quarter. He truly is a freak of an athlete. The rest of the D added big plays in the way of 5 forced fumbles. Todd Johnson played a great game with 5 tackles and 2 of those forced fumbles. He's not Mike Brown but it was good to see him play well today. The secondary as a whole were very solid today and did a good job not letting Alex Smith hit the short routes he was trying to complete.

Overall, it was a great team effort to shut out the 49ers for the first 3 1/2 quarters. The 49ers offense is much improved and playing very well but they were no match for the Bears swarming defense.

ON SPECIAL TEAMS:
Devin Hester only got to field one punt but he took it 42 yards and nearly broke free for another TD. The 49ers clearly didn't want to give him a returnable kick and were punting short and high all day. Davis did a decent job returning kickoffs with a long of 28 yards.

The kick coverage teams played fantastic and Robbie Gould added two more FG's to his perfect record. His kicks from 43 and 36 yards make him 20/20 on the year. His kickoffs were also pretty good with several making it into the end zone.

OVERALL:
The 49ers are a bad team and the Bears did what they have done to every other bad team in Soldier Field this year. Destroy them early. Good teams are supposed to take games early from bad teams and its a good sign that the Bears are doing that at home this year. Now we just have to keep that intensity up on the road. The Dolphins shouldn't put up too much of a fight next week, especially if Joey Harrington is playing QB. Look for the Bears to coast to another easy victory something like 33-9.

Bears!!! I like the orange for a change of pace. Stuart Scot said, "The 49ers went hunting for Bears wearing orange, that's a bad idea."

Grossman was not sacked or knocked down all game. His uniform was clean as can be. Bears tie franchise record for 1st quarter points, now lead the league in points allowed again. They are also on pace to set a new NFL record on point differential.

When is the last time you can remember a Bears QB being benched in the 4th quarter twice in the first eight weeks due to blowouts.

Wouldve been cool if they went for 2 to make it their new record of points in the first half..

lead in points allowed, how does that work? and point differential. I dont know much about football really

Defense is ranked on points allowed, Denver was leading until they played Indy yesterday.

Point differential is Points Scored - Points Allowed

Another record from yesterdays game:

2nd largest margin at halftime of any game in NFL history

That's nice to have when our defense scares the pants off you. Urlacher must have ate his babies yesterday morning, because he was all over the field once again.

Urlacher eating babies on the sidelines is kind of a running joke I have with my buddies, because that's just how nasty he is. BTW this joke started 2-3 years ago, before The Onion's article on the Bears cannibalizing their fans...

Actually, I think Rex has been pulled three times now. Detroit and Seattle games IIRC. We've really put some teams away early this year at home.

As of right now, bears are #1 in points scored and points allowed with 221 points scored and 69 points allowed. I don't think we have the best offense and defense in the league but it would be hard to argue they aren't both in the top 5.

Even after Manning lit up the Broncos yesterday Flinchy? That 2 minute warning drive looked like 100% success from the first play ... maybe you can't knock Denver's D for that since Peyton is just that good.

I have to agree, Bears D is better than Denver. Denver still has not found Reggie Wayne yet, he didn't even show up in their tape review.

the bears can't play on the road (not like it'll matter the way things are going). They should've lost to the vikings AND the cardnals. The Giants game should be a good test.

Dude, they have had three games on the road thus far.
They blew out GB at GB and overcame mistakes in AZ and MN to win. A win is a win until they lose. That being said, Soilders is a huge advantage for them. No matter what I would say that have a good chance for home field through the playoffs. They have a much weaker division than the Giants.

You are correct that they will probably have home field so it won't matter.

and WTF is soilders? You mean soldier field?

Don't fret JoJo, getting Brooks Bollinger into the game was a smart decision....... He's the future of your franchise!

I didn't mean to rank the top five O's and D's 1-5. IMO, if you are a top 5 unit, you are usually pretty darn close to the others in the top 5. All units have good days and bad days so it's near impossible to rank 1-5. Having a bad day against the Colts isn't really so shocking.

There is still a long way to go to get the SuperBowl. The Bears haven't shown they are SB ready just yet.
