The Bears took a beating today as the visiting Miami Dolphins beat the Bears by the score of 31 -13. It was a physical game with hard hitting on both sides of the ball. The difference in this game was turnovers as the Bears coffed up the ball 6 times that resulted in 28 points for the Dolphins. Miami on the other hand kept the ball only giving it up twice on two Joey Harrington INTs. Ronnie Brown did most of the hard work putting up 157 yards on 29 attempts. Harrington finished off the drives with 3 TD passes. To make matters worse, Berrian, Urlacher and McGowan all suffered injuries during the game. We'll see if any are serious.
Bernard Berrian left the game after the first series with a rib injury and our offense went downhill fast. Grossman looked out of synch all day and Miami got good pressure on him most of the game. He finished 15/35 for 185 yards 1TD and 3INTS and a fumble. It was another step back against a good Miami defense. Moose made a very nice TD catch but otherwise looked flat and dropped a couple balls. Gage caught two balls for 51 yards but fumbled the ball after his big 34 yard catch.
Jones and Benson did some decent work but neither showed any big play ability at all. Jones got 69 yards and 20 carries and Benson picked up 34 yards on 8 carriers. The Bears were playing from a defecit most of the game though and some of those yards came against a soft front.
The offense as a whole played poorly including the OL. Miami is a good defense but there is no excuse for how poorly we played. The need of a speed receiver who can stretch the field was obvious as once Berrian was out, the Dolphins crowded the line and Grossman was unable to beat them deep. I have to wonder where Mark Bradley is and why he didn't play? Other than Berrian, Bradley is the only receiver we have with speed.
The abscence of Mike Brown was clear today as Todd Johson did not get it done. The Dolphins were able to throw the ball in key situations and convert third downs. The DL played average, but well below their potential. The Phins concentrated on quick throws and draws and sweeps to keep the DL out of the game. The LBs were caught out of position quite a bit as well. It was just plain ugly.
Alex Brown had a nice highlight reel INT and Vasher came up with a nice play for another INT for the only two turnovers for the Bears. Perhaps the most telling stat of the game, the Bears had 0 sacks.
ON SPECIAL TEAMS:
Devin Hester put the ball on the turf twice and one was on his own 5 yard line. His two returns for 11 yards didn't exactly offset the damage. Robbie Gould conitued his perfect streak hitting 2/2 FGs from 38 yards both times.
Give Miami credit for playing a very good physical game. They were well coached and had a good plan to beat the Bears. Their lines did a good job of running the ball and stopping the run. The Bears were unable to adjust or execute today and turned the ball over too many times to win. This game came down to mistakes and the Bears made far more than the Dolphins. The Bears go on the road next week and play the Giants who squeaked out a win against Houston today. It's going to be another tough game as NY has a fierce pass rush and their offense is explosive. I'm going to wait to see our injury report before predicting that game......
