Bears vs. Vikings Recap

The Bears locked up the NFC Norris division with a 23-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings. On a bum-killing cold day with a nasty crosswind, it was the defense and special teams that controlled the game while both offenses were forced to grind it out on the ground. The Bears are now 8-0 against the NFC and 4-0 in their own division thanks to a score on defense and on special teams. More on that later.

ON OFFENSE:
Offense? We don't need no stinking offense! It's damn good thing too since we didn't bring any today. The only thing working today was Cedric Benson but Ron Turner in his infinite wisdom only gave him the ball 9 times. He made the most of them gaining 60 yards and scoring the only offensive TD for the Bears. Thomas Jones struggled to find daylight all day rushing 12 times for 32 yards. Benson ran hard, turned outside corners and broke tackles. Jones danced and headed for the sidelines. Benson stood up a blitzing LBer. Jones whiffed at blitzing LBers feet all day. This was the first game where Benson was clearly the superior back. He just may be our salvation late this year if the coaches ever smarten up and give him the damn ball.

Rex Grossman stood in the pocket and played like crap yet again. I thought for sure we would have a game plan filled with play action, boot legs and rolling pockets. Instead we saw the same predictable offense as we have the last six weeks. It's clear teams have figured out how to stop our deep passing game and disrupt Rex when he's in the pocket. It's also clear Rex doesn't have good vision from back there. I saw one decent play action pass and it resulted in a first down. Watching Dallas just a bit later I saw play action and roll outs totally confuse the Giants and create vision and space for Tony Romo. We need to do the same for Rex. Cut off half of the field and give him room outside the pocket. It should also stop teams from blitzing up the middle so much. Rex's statline ended 6/19 for 34 yards and 3 INTS.

ON DEFENSE:
The defense gave up just shy of 200 yards rushing but considering they were on the field almost the whole game that isn't as bad as it looks. Most of those yards came on a 42 yarder from Taylor and in the fourth quarter when the D was gassed. The Bears were also playing without Tommie Harris in the second half after he injured his leg. Early reports are he sprained his sore knee but he will go in for an MRI tomorrow. Although he has been quiet lately he consistently eats up blockers and clogs the middle. Let's all hope he is fine.

The defense also managed to put up 5 turnovers, 3 sacks, a safety and a TD. The TD came on a 54 yard INT return from Ricky Manning Jr. when he jumped a short route and Brad Johnson threw him the ball right in the numbers. The safety came from Tank Johnson but it was Chris Harris who made the play happen. Chris Harris had a career game and was a tackling machine. Tank Johnson also was all over the field today and deserves the game ball IMO. He finished with 4 tackles and 1 sack but his impact was much greater.

The pass rush was still a bit off today but it was good early on then faded as they defense tired. The Vikings controlled the ball for 39:21 minutes so it's not surprising the defense finally gassed. The Bears have to start protecting their defense by running the ball and putting some drives together. Injuries and fatigue are starting to mount on the defense.

ON SPECIAL TEAMS:
Special teams played their best game of the season today. Devin Hester had another of his remarkable TD returns going 45 yards and making the entire Vikings team miss along the way. He also had a 25 yard return later in the game. To top it off he averaged 23 yards on three kick off returns. The coverage teams did their job limiting the Vikings to an average of 3.3 yards on punts and 15.5 on kick offs. Punter Brad Maynard had an excellent game as well.

OVERALL:
It was an ugly win but it clinched the playoffs. The Offense needs a new coach and a new plan. Next we visit the St Louis Rams on Monday Night!

I did see a Shotgun once... I agree we need better passing plays by Turner, he still thinks it's the 80's. Rex did look really bad again. I'm beginning to waiver on him.

Good notes as usual Flinchy. Turner needs to take some of the blame. After seeing Rex not having it, he should have had Plan B that allowed him to run the offense without putting pressure on him. WTF are we throwing at the end of the game for??? Defense was good but we have no ability to stop the run. If Shaun Alexander had played in that Seattle game methinks our record would be diff. Rex needs to just keep plugging away. The weather was def a big factor and many veteran QBs would have had trouble. Talking abt substituting him with someone that hasnt done much in his career either makes no sense. If hes got things to work on, get a gameplan that lets him work on those strengths and keep at it. Today is a game he needs to discard and move on. I forget who made this hit but the FIRST hit of the game where the Bears turned over the ball, man that was some sorta hit he took from the Vikings guy. Glad they clinched...but lots more work for the Bears to prepare for the next games.

Any offense that becomes predictable is going to have trouble. Teams have figured out that they don't have to stop the run against the Bears. Turner will eventually throw the ball anyways. Grossman is an average young QB and he's going to make mistakes. Turner needs to show teams that he is willing to run the ball down their throat the whole game and then splash in the playaction later in the game. The pass first to set up the run plan is out and teams are keying on it.

This might almost be something if the Viqueens had a team this year. They really should stick to things they are good at, like boat parties.

The only saving grace for rexy, is that the past 2 weeks, the opposing quarter backs played down to his level. pitiful pitiful football the last two weeks by all teams on offense.

side note: last two weeks Benson has clearly shown hes the better runner. he should have got more of the carries this weekend.
example, benson gets hit in the back field, has the strength to free him self and gain yards, jones loss of 5

Yeah, but Benson is a runner and that's all, he needs to learn to do other things well besides just putting his head down and bulldozing forward. that's the only way he's going to get more playtime.

As for Rex.... 1.3?!?!?!? And was it just me, or was this the first post game interview where Lovee didn't say, "Rex is our QB"?

We may have gotten away with a W this game, but it sure felt like an L .. imho. We did everything we usually did great, but we failed to improve on offense, in fact we had horrible numbers against a 31st ranked passing defense, unacceptable . Grossman looked frustrated, though Ron Turner can take half the blame for this. With the Bears up in the 4th, with 3-4 mins left... Turner called acouple passing plays downfield to Berrian instead of running the clock out with Jones and potentially turning the ball over for an easy TD return.

I've been a Bears all my life, but with an anemic offense turning the ball over this many times a game, i'd be surprised that we get past the first round of the playoffs with the way we're playing.

Grossman needs to relax and stop airing it out.

I think that's exactly what we need. A guy that runs forward. I'd rather see Benson push the pile for 2-3 yards than Jones juke away from the pile and lose 2 yards.

probably, but truthfully that's probably why they don't play him more.... well that and the fact that they are probably trying to quell his "holier than thou" attitude.

In the press conference I was watching he did. They had Rex interviewing before Lovie, and Lovie still said "Rex is our QB" Then he went on and said we are 10-2 with Rex and we won our division with Rex as our QB.

You it is sad that the oldest franchise in the league has never had a developing QB.

This is what other teams go through it is going to be like this. The guy is coming close to passing Sid F'n Luckman records.

That being said I may be strting to waiver but I do not trust Griesse.

bench grossman. period.
and don't tell me "look at the record" BULLSH*T!
look at last year's record with Orton at this time of the year: 9-3

i think grossman is a WARM WEATHER quarterback, hence his success in FLORIDA... i don't know why anyone else has not brought this up yet. as the months get colder and colder, he gets worse and worse... i think he has Seasonal Affective Disorder. his playing sure is SAD.

defense may win games, but they wont win in the playoffs (never mind the superbowl) with just defense/special teams posting almost all of your points. offense has to do SOMEthing. and it isn't about ron turner's play calling, it's grossman's inability to see the field... i remember quite a few plays where they showed a replay of a receiver WIDE open that is actually in range, and grossman decides to air it out...

maybe he still has his college football mentality, where they don't know how to play defense and a long bomb usually works on 1-on-1 or 2-on-1 coverage...

not any more rexy. time to wake up and smell what you shovellin'!!

If Grossman is gonna be QB then we should just punt the ball on first down and let the D play the game. enough is enough put in Orton he can see over the O line

I say someone should rig up a shock devise to his hand every time he attempts to throw the ball over 15 yards . I definitely don't want Orton in again. At least Rex can get a few first downs. Orton sucked monkey balls, if that is the case, we may as well have a raffle before the game, and whichever fan wins suits up to be the QB.

Rex has problems seeing the field. No doubt about that any more. He also has shown a habit of locking in on receivers. But he has been making better decisions lately regarding throwing into double coverage downfield. He just happens to be throwing picks to single coverage downfield lately. I think Turner is afraid to call slants and curls because Rex has trouble seeing Lbers and safeties behind the DL. I say roll his damn ass out of the pocket!

I don't buy the Benson doesn't start due to him not being a complete back story. The only thing Jones may do better is catch passes but he hasn't been doing that lately either. Benson may be a prima-donna jagbag of a teammate, but he runs hard and he runs fast. He needs 25+ carries a game.

Damn, I wasn't feeling that bad about Rex until I watched some other NFL games this weekend. Romo, Eli Manning, Delhomme, and Garcia all had excellent games the last two days. You even had Philidelphia booing Garcia, and he looked like Peyton Manning compared to Rex Grossman of late. We may really have to change things up. We need to swap with Philly to show them how bad it really can get .

That is some of the funniest shit I have read in a LONG time

"That's how we do it in the Sexy Business"

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming WOW, what a RIDE !!"
