For those who've seen him perform in person it's incredibly moving and incredibly respectful. This is horseshit. Now my weekend is ruined.

They have done this kind of thing to a few other schools in Mich as well - We did kinda rape 'em on the whole "land grab" thing

it's a lot more complex when it divides the student population. It's gotta be something like a third of the students there are anti-chief. It's just all about the money, the school is more concerned with making an extra buck than keeping the mascot they've had for 81 year. In retrospect I guess it's better this way than having a huge spike in my tuition. I've always been pro-Chief, I don't see how any of it is disrepectful, but someone will find a cause to get behind because they want to feel important and take it to the end. Damn bleeding-heart tree huggers You know it's bad when a professor is telling the class alternates places to buy books if you don't want to give your business to places that support the Chief.

RIP Chief

This is complete horsesh#t. I cannot believe how far things are gone. Are the Redskins gonna have to change to the Palefaces or something now? Theres just way too much of this BS going around. At least they are very respectful of it and its one of the FEW last things we keep around that remind us. But on another note, at least it will finally not be talked abt anymore after this one stretch which it always seems to be every year.

I don't think anyone has to the right to determine if the mascot is offensive or not, unless you're an American Indian

I wouldn't want some Fraterinty boy dancing around as a Rabbi, rooting for the San Jose State Jews (I'm half Jewish obviously)

But I also agree there are more important things to get worked up about than some College mascot

Ahh, the SJSJ's, you don't hear about them too much anymore. J/k, I definately agree with you about what you said though. Only problem, is where do you find American Indians?!? I forgot which comedian it was (probably George Carlin) but he said it best when he said "when was the last time you saw a family of Indians in public? When was the last time you saw 1 Indian in public?!?" The NCAA is just a bunch of [email protected]#$ies (I swear it says pansies).

my auto shop teacher in HS was 100% American Indian. He was a big mean motherfucker too. Remindes me of Shep Proudfoot in Fargo. My buddy was pissed at him once and told him to, "Go back to your reservation." I thought the teacher was gonna put my buddy thru a wall

I think this comes pretty close to how I feel.

Dawn Turner Trice

Let us bury Chief Illiniwek, not praise him

Published February 19, 2007

Good riddance to Chief Illiniwek. May he rest in peace.

As a University of Illinois alum, I can't tell you how thrilled I am to see him go and the controversy along with him.

How so many could have reveled in watching a man dressed in feathers and buckskin and pretending to be Native American jump around a basketball court and a football field for so long is beyond me.

Though the chief has been around for 81 years, he has only caused a stink over the last 20. I recall the hubbub brewing as I was leaving the Urbana campus in 1987. I also recall sitting through games watching Chief Illiniwek, my stomach turning every time he danced or did a tomahawk chop.

It wasn't a stretch for me to see why some Native Americans found him offensive and repugnant. He was a minstrel in symbolic red face. Supporters could talk all they wanted about the chief being a cherished tradition; how he was honoring the contributions of American Indians.

Give me a break. He didn't dance around displaying the contributions of Native Americans. He took powerful religious and cultural symbols and perverted them. Native Americans said they neither liked the depictions nor saw them as honorable.

I can't imagine that over the years Native Americans have aspired to see representations of themselves as mascots, whooping and hollering around athletic stadiums in pseudo-warrior regalia during half-time shows.

Supporters of Chief Illiniwek say this is political correctness gone awry. They say they don't find the Chief demeaning. I wouldn't expect them to. Many see this issue from the vantage point of the best seats in the house. Not the ones in the back of the bus.

When the Chief began doing his thing decades ago, the publishing industry and later Hollywood were doing their thing portraying American Indians as one-dimensional warmongers. That's why the "Indian" mascots, logos and names (such as the Braves) worked for sports teams. They helped characterize the teams as threatening, capable of annihilating the opponent. At one time, some mascots even made scalping gestures.

Later, some of the stereotypes were toned down, but that didn't remove the sting. Supporters hoped it would trick Native Americans and others into believing the mascots truly had value. It's like they were saying: "Never mind the details. We know better than you. Don't be so touchy."

How paternalistic.

What's heartening about all of this is that it wasn't only people of color who found Chief Illiniwek offensive. He had his detractors among many white students as well.

What's most disheartening, though, is that the University of Illinois wasn't interested in doing what was right until the NCAA tied its hands. Last week, the university finally decided to get rid of the chief after pressure from the NCAA, which in 2005 said the mascot was offensive and barred the university from holding postseason games.

University officials said the decision wasn't linked to the revenue it would lose by not being able to host those games. Yeah, right.

The Chief will be no more after his last dance Wednesday during a home game against Michigan.

"The Chief Illiniwek tradition...was created, carried on and enjoyed by people with great respect for tradition, and we appreciate their dedication and commitment," Board of Trustees Chairman Lawrence Eppley told the Associated Press on Friday. "It will be important now to ensure the accurate recounting and safekeeping of the tradition as an integral part of the history of the university."

I hope the "accurate recounting" includes the many students, alumni and faculty members who have wanted the chief kicked to the curb for years. And as far as the "safekeeping of the tradition," I see no need for a wistful walk into the sunset. Deliver his eulogy. Close the casket. Send him on his way.

Remember the often irreverent comedian the late Moms Mabley? Once, after some rather objectionable man had died, she was told she shouldn't speak ill of the dead.

She was told she should say only good things about him. So she said something like this: `OK then, he's dead. Good.'

My sentiments exactly about the chief.

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.
