...and right after two of his worst performances of the year

5 years at $90mil is going rate for his level.

Good for the Cubs and Zambrano...... now he can concentrate on baseball. I wouldn't be surprised if we swept the Cards this weekend! Cubbies in first come Monday afternoon

I've got mixed feeling about Zambrano. He's a head case and really inconsistant. I'm glad he's staying here but I wouldn't mind if he was part of a decent trade, (obviously not going to happen in the near future now)

Inconsistant? How would you describe Prior or Wood?

over worked and undertrained at thier beginning thus leading to everything that has happened with them.

Not so much those 2 guys, it was more of a Cubs mistake in thinking that they could come back and just kept pushing that only making things worse.

I agree with you Maynard^^^

I don't want the Cubs to waste any more energy on either one of them, (Wood or Prior)

Agreed. Prior is way done, but we could probably salvage Wood as a setup or closer but I wouldn't bank on it. He still throws a mean fast ball..

Our bullpen can use the help.

Wood's HS coach set him up for ultimately failure...waaaaaaaaay overused.

The day he was drafted in the 1st round by the cubs, his coach had him throw BOTH ends of a double header at his Texas High School...the Cubs organization phoned the aloof head coach that day and informed him that Woody was no longer his to destroy, but the damage had been done.

Elbow injuries generally come from bad mechanics, shoulder problems are more typical of overuse.

Do you think Baker pitched Prior to the ground?

Prior in 2003 was indestructable though.

+1!! Wood was over used early on his career and throwing that slurve he used for the 20 strike out game jacked up his arm.
Zambrano is a good deal and I'm glad they got it done. He's a young LEGITIMATE number 1 starter and there aren't alot available. If he hit free agency, the Mets and Yankee would have been all over him like McLovin on the HS prom queen.
Pitching wins championships, and if he can back it up, I don't mind his outburst.

Prior was never the same after the collision with Marcus Giles. He landed right on his shoulder and then he comes back and gets a line drive to the elbow. That's some bad luck.
Maybe he'll come out of this and be a solid starter but I don't know about dominating like he was in 2003.

My take on Prior is simple...he completely dominated his competition throughout his entire life, including his first two and a half years professionally. When faced for the first time with failure he wilted. While yes, he did face injury, it's my opinion that his biggest problem is in his head. He just doesn't seem to be able to deal with difficulty very well.

Going to the game tomorrow on a rooftop, gotta love when vendors offer up their "perks". Wish it was something I am more interested in like MotoGP tickets. But I'll manage.......free food, booze and hopefully lots of young pootang!

I say use Wood as a closer. We haven't had a decent closer in as long as I can remember! That is *if* he can stay healthy! thi man gets hurt stepping out of his hot tub for pete's sake...he's a trainwreck!

Z's deal was a good one for him, and for us die hards. He gave up some $$ to stay in Chicago, and to ahve him locked in is great for us!

As for our bullpen, I see it as steadily improving. We have some talent. We just need to develop it a little more. Hill is looking good, Lily is on his game 85% of the time, Marquis is usually looking good.

Looking forward to kicking the Cards ass!

You can't be serious. Give up our most consistant pitcher over the last few years for a damaged goods bullpen pitcher who now has a 15 ERA in Boston?

Why would you want Wood as the closer? He has not been very good since coming back. He's been ok and hopefully he'll get better but he's certainly not who you want as the closer. I like Dempster as the closer. Marmol is our best out of the bullpen (and I swear he pitches every game) but I like how they use him now. I've always believed that your best bullpen pitcher should be use in jams rather then the 9th if you're wining by a few runs.

Gange's poor performance in Boston has been a fluke. The man's a powerhouse. Whats his career ERA??? Low 2.0's I'm guessing. Not to mention the amout of saves he has.

I love Carlos, don't get me wrong. But once he starts doing his chicken dance on the mound, he's done for the day. That happens more often than I'd like

Plus I like doing things unconventionally. I wanna see someone go to a 4 man rotation and see how it works out. 5th starter is a shit position. Winning percentages for the 5th starter thruout baseball is low, (like 30%). Get a solid closer who will play 4 out of 5 games and consilidate your starting pitching at the same time, (I guess you would need to pick up another decent starting pitcher for this to work. Pick up someone else solid 2nd or 3rd starter. Blah! Ok my plan has holes. Heres what you do. Keep Zambrano, get Gange, go with the 4 man rotation done and done)

Eric

I agree Gagne was a stud before he got hurt but he's not the same pitcher now. He was unhittable when he went on his streak and won the cy young but so was wood when he struck out 20. We don't need anymore pitchers that used to be good. The only issue with a four man rotation is who you take out. Marquis, Hill, and Marshall all seem to take turns having bad starts so I don't think you'd gain much by removing one.
