Sports Illustrated picks the Cubs to win the National League pennant.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/quick...1hit27.article

March 27, 2008

BY ELLIOTT HARRIS Sun-Times Columnist

This week's sign of the apocalypse (or maybe merely sympathy for a franchise that hasn't been in a World Series since 1945 and hasn't won one since 1908): Sports Illustrated picks the Cubs to win the National League pennant.

SI has the NL Central champs (91-71 and winning by four games over Dusty Baker's Reds, six over the Brewers, 17 over the Astros, 18 over the Cardinals and 21 over the Pirates) defeating the wild-card Diamondbacks in the NL Division Series, then downing the Rockies in the NL Championship Series to reach the World Series.

Quick Hits

There, they will face the Tigers in a rematch of the 1945 Fall Classic. And the Cubs will take another classic fall, with the Tigers (who are forecast to beat the Red Sox and Yankees in the postseason) triumphing once again. Ah, so close.

The White Sox? SI has them finishing 77-85, good (or bad) enough for third place (13 games back) in the American League Central, with the Indians ending up one game behind the Tigers. Lack of pitching will limit the Sox, SI believes.

But there is some consolation. Says SI of the Sox: ''With the new faces onboard, this summer should at least be more fun.''

LOCKDOWN ON LOCKS DOWN: NFL wants hair under helmets

The NFL might not be going with the flow.

Of players' hair from their helmets.

At the owners meeting next week in Florida, under consideration will be a proposal to ban players from wearing hair that extends beyond their helmets.

No need for outrage or to split hairs for those who like longer locks. The rule would not mandate haircuts but would ''require them to tuck it up inside their helmets,'' said Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, the chairman of the NFL's competition committee.

Among those likely to be affected by such a rule are Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu (who was tackled by his hair two seasons ago by Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson after an interception) and cornerbacks Al Harris of the Green Bay Packers and Mike McKenzie of the New Orleans Saints.

Just a guess, but the biggest impact will be on unruly split ends.

COLLECTIBLES CORNER: Not your regular art show

New works from Minnesota native Robert Blehert will be among the art on display at the 36th annual Sun-Times Sports Collectible and Autograph Convention, which runs Friday to Sunday at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. More specifically, three pieces he has done specifically for the show: local legends Michael Jordan, Walter Payton and Ernie Banks.

• • Former Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder George Shuba will be at the NegroLeagueLegends.org booth at the show Friday and Saturday. A photo of Shuba in a 1946 interracial handshake with Jackie Robinson crossing home plate for Class AAA Montreal is among the memorable moments in the journey to ending major-league baseball's color barrier a season later. Former Negro League players Hank Presswood, Johnny Washington, Ernie Westfield, ''Sonny'' Weston and Bob Wiggins also are scheduled to appear.

• • To commemorate the final season of ''The House That Ruth Built,'' Nikco Sports is offering a limited-edition framed photo collage featuring images of the first and last Opening Days. The piece also will include game-used dirt. From each sale of the $99 item, $10 will go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The collage is available at (800) 345-2868 or at www.nikcosports.com.

• • Highland Mint has produced a photo plaque of recently retired Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Not sure whether Bears fans should use it as a dartboard, however. The plaque, which costs $89.95, is available at (888) 560-2727 or at www.sbflip.com.

• • The Premier Collectibles Conference and Exhibition will be held April 17-20 at the Stephens Convention Center. Admission is $10, free for children under 12 (or to anyone who registers before March 31). Among the items on display will be a 1908 Frank Chance uniform, a ball from Game 5 of the 1907 World Series between the Cubs and Tigers, 1906-08 world championship medallions and Cubs pennants (circa 1908). Information is available at www.pcce2008.com.

HE GETS AROUND: BEARS' GOULD MAN ABOUT TOWN

Life is good for Robbie Gould.

The Bears' kicker has been busy relaxing this offseason.

He recently shot the puck during the second-period intermission at a Blackhawks game.

And Saturday night he was at the Rush game, where he sized up the kicking situation.

How would he like to have to aim at such narrow goalposts?

''I definitely wouldn't because our posts are a lot larger than the ones in the Arena Football League,'' he told Quick Hits. ''I have a lot of respect for the guys who play in the AFL simply because it's a lot harder to kick in the AFL than it is in the NFL.''

Then again, the AFL features shorter fields.

''Every time the offense gets the ball, you're going to get an opportunity to kick at some point,'' he said. ''It's a fun game to watch. I saw my first game last year. Ever since then, I've been hooked.''

Speaking of hooks (and slices), Gould is scheduled to be part of the Playboy Golf Scramble on Friday in California.

Presumably, he has recovered from attending an even later event Saturday night: a fashion show featuring Kim Kardashian.

''It's a rough life,'' Gould joked.

Where do you sign up for all that?

''I don't know,'' he said. ''Somehow they give me a dotted line, and I put my name on it.''

is this the year for the 2nd coming of Christ?

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

Watching the Cubs lose is the opposite of appreciating a fine wine — it’s like watching a car accident in progress. It’s horrifying, yet gruesomely riveting, and you can’t help but watch and sympathize with the poor souls inside.

yeah.. with what team and what pitching. Notice the prediction that they will not win the World Series. They could win the weak central division and anything can happen in the playoffs.

Never bet on the Cubs to win it all in Vegas, it is the worst odds every year because everyone puts money on them.

Nice, spoken like a true Cubs fan...nothing to do with the game or baseball in general, just the hot girls there...haha, j/k;

Now, speaking like a true Sox fan, look and see the last time Sports Illustrated was actually right with their predictions...Every year besides this year and last year they picked the Yankees to win just because they have a +200million dollar payroll. Course, the Yanks haven't even won a World Series since their payroll went over 100million...so...yeah...SI kinda just guesses (and once in awhile they give the Cub fans some hope).

Well, I gotta get to sleep, I'm goin to the home opener of the winning Chicago team tomorrow afternoon By the way, that was not an invitation to talk about how last year the Cubs record was better than the Sox, because I know how much you guys hate it when Sox fans say we won the World Series in the last 100 years
