Chicago Baseball - Trades, Rumors, and Signings

Two trades today:

Cubs trade minor league prospect RP Jose Ceda for RP Kevin Gregg of the Florida Marlins. Gregg had 29 saves for the Marlins but lost his closer job towards the end of the year. This pretty much means that Kerry Wood will not be back with Marmol and Gregg in the running for closer.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseb...111308.article

Not to be outdone:
The Sox trade Nick Swisher to the Yankees for Wilson Betemit and minor-league prospects Jhonny Nunez, a right-handed reliever, and starting pitcher Jeff Marquez.

Who cares about the Cubs, but the Sox are assholes for getting rid of Swish.

People take these things too seriously!

So it looks like Swish actually ended up with the Yankees. Great.

Sounds like Atlanta has the inside track right now. I think the Padres are stringing the Cubs along to get Atlanta to sweeten the deal.

He hit .219 made 21 million and had no position. Good guy but he was going to ride the bench.

I still don't totally get the Kerry Wood thing. Keeping him around all these years, (when he has been on DL most of the time), and putting soooooo much effort into him, they finally find a good role for him as a closer and he does very well and stayed injury free.....and now hes gone.

I know he's no spring chicken anymore and he's definatly not the future, but to have another year or two of not having to worry about a closer would have been nice

Eric

Swisher > Konerko

To argue otherwise implies delusional tendencies. Konerko should have be traded at this hightest value after the WS. He's rubbish.

They are not going to give him a 4yr 40+million contract which is what he will get offered.

They want Marmol to close.

Exactly as Paladin said. Hendry only offered Wood a one year deal. I'm going to guess he signs a 3-4 year deal worth $15 million a year somewhere. And that he will be on the DL once a year for at least 2 weeks each year. Risky to bring him back with the miles and cuts on his shoulder/elbow over the years.

Cubs need to part ways with Lee and get Teixeira.
Wood should take a huge home town discount due to that fact on any other team he would have been cut and pushing carts at Walmart.
Chicago needs to part ways with the White Sox.

If my calculations are correct, this will create ice... OH NO, KILLER MUSTARD GAS!

The Cubs have re-signed free-agent pitcher Ryan Dempster to a four-year contract, the team announced today. Sources say the deal is worth $52 million.

i hope that the cubs can make some good trades and get rid of some of the under performing players so they can be equally as good and disappointing next year.

You were closer than I was, he signed a 2 year $20 million contract with the Indians.

I would like to see them move Derrick Lee, but he has a no trade clause and is making big bucks.

For all you DeRo fans.......he's an Indian now:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_yl...v=ap&type=lgns

Quote:
The Cleveland Indians acquired versatile infielder Mark DeRosa on Wednesday in a trade that sent three minor leaguers to the Chicago Cubs.

The Indians traded pitchers Jeff Stevens, Chris Archer and John Gaub for DeRosa, who will likely slide into Cleveland’s opening at third base.

The 33-year-old DeRosa hit a career-high 21 homers and drove in 87 runs last season in 149 games while playing six different positions for the NL Central champions
The signing of Aaron Miles earlier today meant it likely DeRosa or Fontenot would be gone.
