The lottery just opened last week, sign up NOW! You will not know if you got a tag until May or June. Read up on the dnr site, there is also a number of locations that do lotteries the day of, just need to show up bright and early and take a chance of driving a few hours for nothing.

Also, take a Hunting Education course. Learn how to do it safely, and humanely. It may be required if you decide to go out of state (but I really am not sure as I don't hunt)

Good idea if you do not have friends who could show you the ropes.

Too many times, even the most experienced hunters get cought up in the moment and take a bad shot and an injured deer runs away to die a slow death or after a good shot they try to get out of the stand and spooke the deer before it had a chance to lay to rest.

Ahh YES! You're totally right. They mentioned that at the gun club this weekend. ASC has the largest number of Hunter Education graduates in IL (possibly the midwest). I'll probably be taking the class this year as well, just for the education, or if I'm ever asked to hunt. I too like deer meat, but I don't hunt.

And for the love of God make sure you know what a deer looks like first.

Long story. Involves a Chicago businessman, local sheriffs dept and a holstien.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

You're going to need a slug gun for IL.

I take it no center fire still?

When you see those "Deer Crossing" signs be sure to drive at least 10mph over the limit. No special license needed!!! The fender makes 'em tender.

If your into poaching, there are 6 deer that live in the woods across the street from me. It is inside city limits so you will have to use a bow.

Just make sure its a doe, sneaking up on a buck with a knife could result in some hillarious footage.

the comment about the bow was probably a joke but do you not need a license if hunting with a bow?

You still need a hunting license to bow hunt. If you were born after I think 1980 or 81 you will need to take the hunter safety class. I was born in 81 and needed it.

FYI the state has a few free bow hunting areas for deer. I hunt geese up at Lake Shabbona and it's always packed with deer hunters too, though I've never seen a deer taken from there. They do it at Iroquois County too and I've seen guys take deer from that place when I was out there Pheasant hunting.

Bow season is much longer then shotgun season, but similar rules apply.

Well if you want to hunt deer with a rifle, its $160 for a WI deer license (non-resident) and if you were born after Jan 1, 1973 you need a hunters safety card.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.
