Practical/Tactical and 3 Gun Sports

Does anyone here host, or participate in Practical/Tactical and/or 3 Gun Sport shooting?

I'm looking to gather as much information about the rules and safety guidelines different clubs and ranges have for "drawing from holster" and "shooting steels" to make a proposal to the board members at Aurora Sportsman's Club.

I also have it in mind to try and get the Magpul guys to teach at ASC this year if it's at all possible, and have already broached the subject with a board member.

Contact me at: [email protected] if you have something to share, or can get me contact information of someone who can give me the information.

Thanks!

I had a buddy in North Carolina who did 3-gun comps every month but I lost contact with him. Sorry, but free bump anyways.

Thanks all. I got the hookup through Bek who introduced me to some very nice guys in the field. It should give me a good start for our own club shooting events.

There is a practical rifle on the 27th, but I'm not sure if it's ASC members only. Let me find out and I'll get back to you. Going forward, I hope to push ASC to do more Tactical/Action Shooting sports...but it's an uphill battle.

How is this club? How many shooting lanes do they have?

Mike, if you mean Aurora Sportsman's Club. It's a reinvention of the old club they had in St. Charles. You can say they have a lot of space:

The area that hosts the lanes is about 500 yards wide, and the ranges are 25' 25, 50, 100, 200, and 600 yards. Behind those is the huge shotgun area where they have all sorts of shotgun sports, as well as a 3d archery area.

As for how good the club is...well, it's still run by old guys stuck in their old guy ways. But I'm teaming up with some guys who shoot in more modern styles, and we are working to get more action/tactical style shooting at ASC.

ASC is expensive, but it's got a great facility...and you don't have to stress about any gangsta off the street rolling in and shooting dangerously. They also host regular events for benchrest, practical pistol and rifle, and days to honor our veterans.

How long have you been a member? I would have to get there about 10 times a year to break even, but that may be tough with my kids playing softball & soccer on the weekends. I like the farther, 100-600 yds, shooting areas though. I wish it were a little closer too. It's an hour drive for me.

I would also suggest the ISRA range down by Kankakee if this is a concern for some. I know I really dislike the seedy characters at the local indoor/public ranges. Was at JR last week looking at a used S&W. Wow. That place has zero sense of muzzle control and safe gun handling. When I see a fella aiming a pistol sideways it is time to leave.

I've been a member, negative 5 days. I get my membership card next Thursday, so till then I'm not actually a member...though I've been out to the facility for the Zombie Shoot, and a couple other times with friends who are members, plus TWO orientations (one for me, and one for Brianne).

It's an hour away from me. Which is the same travel time for ISRA, and Buffalo...of the three, I opted for ASC due to the facilities.

That was the runner up range for me and Bri. Defib is a member there, so we plan on going out there some day to check it out. We figured if she was a member there, and Bri and I are members at ASC, we'd have many options of where to shoot if we wanted to.
