Need AR-15 help.

So I'm going to put together a AR-15. I woudl like to just buy a RRA AR-15 tatical, but it is close to some banned guns on the california gun ban list.

SO what i can do is match the RRA upper with another lower...or the RRA lower with another upper.

Can I get some opinions on a comparable upper or lower I should be looking at?

There are several manufactures of lowers on the market. All the finishes will vary. Armalite, Colt, Bravo Co., Bushmaster, Delton, DPMS, DSArms, Spikes, S&W ect. They will all work, but these are known good companies. just stay away from the deals too good to be true.

Ok, so here is what i'm thinking,

RRA AR-15 complete lower
Colt AR-15 Complete upper.
Install Mag release lock
get crappy 10 round mags

Then I'll Cali legal. What do you guys think?
Will there be any problem getting a colt upper to work with a RRA lower?
WHere would be a good place to order the parts?

Stuff like this is what I was talking about in the other thread. You really need to read the laws on this one Steve or you're going to end up getting badly burned. Colt lowers ARE NOT banned by California, just certain models.

I'm not just being a dick here, either read the laws or talk to someone who knows them VERY well. The risks you're running here are massive. Nothing screws up a new job like having to disclose the fact that you're now a convicted felon...

IF you look at the list you posted, which i have before it lists COLT AR-15 as banned, which would includes the lower which defines the gun. This is confirmed by people on calguns.net. Yes there is slight debate on if you can sneak through a colt lower, but it's not worth it.

I have done the research and thats why i stated getting a RRA lower with a different upper. Completely legal (as long as I install a mag lock and don't use more than a 10 round clip.

I haven' set on this configuration. I'm actually going to meet up with Ponch and maybe look into a complete custom built. We will see.

Eh, why are you stuck on RRA.
Have you checked up on them lately? There have been reports of TERRIBLE customer service from them in the last year and shoddier manufacturing.
If you're gonna piece a gun together, just get a Mega, Spikes, BR ordinance or any other cheap but good quality forged/billet lower and get a BCM or VLTOR upper.

Or just order an M & P Cali ready AR.

And if you read the law, you'd see that the Colt "AR-15" as defined on that list refers ONLY to the roll mark. If it were a Colt AR marked "Big Johnson 5000" it would be allowed.

I'm done with this, talk to someone who knows Cali laws or enjoy prison, either way, good luck duder, I tried.

Use to be (maybe still) RRA would just dremel the M4 feed ramp notches on already coated upper receivers. Pretty crappy from a large manufacturer.

You can pick up an assembled (with forward assist and dust cover) upper nowadays for $90 from Spikes and Bravo. Spike also has lowers for $85. I'm pretty sure they'll ship to CA. They will also sell you an assembled lower and pin the stock of your choice for you to make it CA legal. I seem to recall they have a complete lower for $250.

Tom, the CEO, is cool and he'll work with you to make sure you're legal and get what you want at a good price. The quality of their parts is great, no need to pay for the added "brand tax" of Colts or others.
