This gives me some ideas...

I was just sent this photo. I like the XD, I'm looking for a .45, and I like the idea of .460 Rowland after it was mentioned here in the forums.

As cool as it might seem, designer rounds are pretty lame in a SHTF scenario. If it isn't NATO, I don't want it.

If you are going to go designer, go 9x25 Dillon and REALLY mess someone up.

I agree with smartdrug. Not so much on his second point, but on the fact that non-Nato rounds just seem to be more expensive. To be honest, I've never heard of .460 Rowland till now.

Non- NATO is different from Designer rounds. .40 S&W is Non-NATO but readily available and quite cheap. Try finding 460 Rowland at your average gun store or at Gander Mountain and you'll likely be SOL. My not liking anything aside from 9mm/5.56/7.62x51/12ga. is besides the point, you'll never be able to feed this thing for much under $1 a round even if you're reloading yourself, seems kind of pointless to me.

If we lived in a carry state and you wanted a piece that would absolutely decimate someone with one round, I could see the allure of a round like this (although I'd still rather pack 9x25) but since we only have two real uses for pistols in Illinois, range duty and SHTF (I would use a Shotgun for HD and avoid a pistol), Designer rounds like this hold very little draw for me.

I tend think like SD: if it's not NATO I don't own it.

But the 460 Rowland seems like a great round. Something slightly less "boutique-ish" with nearly the same ballistics would the 10 mm auto. IMHO, if you're going to go boutique go 10 mm.

On the XD in the pic do they change out recoil spring, barrel compensated, etc? My biggest fear would be increasing the recoil that much in a gun without compensating for it somehow. Either way I wonder how bad that gun gets beat up shooting that hot of a round. I'm sure in their barrel design they compensate for nearly doubling the chamber pressure. I bet that thing has an incredible recoil!! lol. Follow up shots *may* be a problem!! lol.

ON this XD, the barrel is compensated. I forgot to ask about the springs.

As for SHTF, as I've said before, we've already got 9mm, .40, .45, and 12 Gauge covered. I'm looking for a "fun" round...and besides, it's a very simple swap back to stock parts to run .45 again. *and* the .460 uses easy to find projectiles, so reloading makes availability a non-issue for me, as long as I have *my* brass.

I just like the idea that there is a shop out there making conversion kits for Tactial XD, and I've been told the M&P .45 that I was considering as well.

While watching that video I was comparing the .460 to the 50 Beowolf. Impressive in that you can use .45ACP parts in the .460 and also nice that you can get this into a standard .45 mag.
I didn't finish the vid but I will when I get back. Gotta start getting ready for tonight.

How much does 460 Rowland brass cost? How many times can you re-use before it's done? Aside from the compensator, what else is required to shoot that round out of a XD45?

Back to the 9x25 Dillon, it will go into a Glock 20 with a simple barrel swap and a different recoil spring. It uses standard 10mm Auto brass that is necked down with 9mm projectiles. If you're talking about a reloading situation, this seems WAY easier than having to buy specialized brass (assuming your reload setup can neck down brass). Just a thought. I do dig the XD though, do they make a .50GI setup for it yet?

the recoil spring isn't even an issue really, because if you buy a G20, the first thing you need to buy is a 22lbs spring, 9x25 conversion plans or not. I dunno WTF they were thinking putting a 17lbser in there. Fire one with full power 10mm and the brass will launch into low orbit, and you will feel the fucker bottom out on the frame.

M&P 357 now. Oddball enough to satiate my desire to be different, but common enough I can get ammo at Walmart.

Ya know, you could always pick up some 45 Super brass. The XDs are allegedly capable of handling them right out of the box. 230gr ~1100 FPS. You could probably load it a bit hotter using a slower powder like Power Pistol, Blue Dot or maybe Longshot.
