The Illinois Senate voted unanimously Wednesday to mandate anyone convicted of unlawful use of a weapon to spend up to three years in prison if the offender was carrying a loaded weapon without a Firearms Owners Identification Card, the Sun-Times reports.

I did not think a FOID card would help you too much if you were caught carrying/transporting a loaded weapon.

So you mean, if I am carrying a gun Illegally its a crime?

No, what it means is, if you get caught with a loaded gun and have a foid card it's still a slap in the wrist as it has been always.

Edit: Even the Mayor agrees....

"In a statement, Daley praised lawmakers. He also ripped on the current law claiming "unlawful use of a weapon is so common, [charges are] just thrown out. Whether it's juveniles or young adults, they're back right on the street.... It's treated like spitting on the sidewalk."

So this rule only applies to to those unlawfully using a gun and not carrying a FOID?

These actions are both currently heavily legislated...now if you do both you simultaneously it's a stiffer penalty? It was less than 3 years previously?

It really means don't worry about it.

You would need one major thing to happen. A conviction. Which as I mentioned above... rarely happens.

Do I have to apply for a new foid now that my name has changed, or do you think I could get away with not?

There are good laws and there are dumb laws… Most people are law abiding and if you’re not doing any thing wrong…have your card with you. No big thing!

It’s more for the ones that have a gun illegally so they can be identified on the spot because there’s already have some kind of back ground check when one goes’ through the FOID process... Saving time.

They are stepping up the penalties for illegal possesion of a firearm ( no FOID ).

If you are legal otherwise and get caught carrying concealed illegally ( FOID / No Carry Permit ) they tend to let that slide.

Personally, I think it's good..... it *may* discourage some people from carrying illegal
weapons to avoid the jail-time.

Personally, I think it should be more severe.
