Is that just some type of set-screw which recesses the firing pin inside the hammer so it can't strike the round?

Kinda like wearing three rubbers at the same time, sure, in theory it might make you safer but totally not needed.

seems to me its not a safety per say but more of a lock out device like a trigger lock or
through the barrel cable lock

Something else that could fail and not make the gun go bang when you NEED it to go bang.

The gun really is a pretty decent deal, so what if it has a safety that I never use. After the rebate mine ended up being around $425 new when they first came out.

cereally....

John Moses Browning (January 21[1] or January 23,[2] 1855 – November 26, 1926), born in Ogden, Utah, was an American firearms designer who developed many varieties of firearms, cartridges, and gun mechanisms, many of which are still in use around the world. He is the most important figure in the development of modern automatic and semi-automatic firearms and is credited with 128 gun patents. His first was granted October 7, 1879. He had made his first firearm at 10 in his father's gun shop.[1]

I didn't know his middle name
I didn't know Taurus were Brownings
and I've never heard of him referred to as JMB before
at least not that I can think of.

Is this common knowledge?

Dieudonné Saive had quite a bit to do w/the P-35 as he finished the design a few years after Browning passed. Dieudonné Saive was also one of the designers of the FN-FAL, so he was no one shot wonder. Nobody will surpass John Browning, however.
