Riding to the gun range

I'm going to assume this is a bad idea -- but just in case anyone happens to know differently.

Unloaded pistol in a locked backpack while riding a bike -- go/nogo?

I wonder ... if you had panniers and it was in there with a trigger lock, in a locked case, in a locked panier. Its out of reach and its locked I'd assume it would be okay. Not sure about the backpack.

As long as the gun is UNLOADED, NOT Immediately accessible (locked in a case), and you have a FOID card, you should be OK..

If you DO run into the law.... be VERY clear about the weapon and that the ammo is elsewhere.

I suggest hip holsters that show while you're riding. That way the cops can know for sure that you're carrying.

It's fine, provided you meet one of the the three criteria: Here's the law

Unlawful use of a weapon (720 ILCS 5/24-1(a)(4) and (10)
Quote:
does not apply to or affect transportation of weapons that meet one of the following conditions:

(i) are broken down in a non‑functioning state;
or
(ii) are not immediately accessible; or
(iii) are unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container by a person who has been issued a currently valid Firearm Owner's Identification Card;

No problem with this. As long as you have a FOID card, the firearm is unloaded and enclosed in a case you are fine. It is a very good idea to print out the law and keep it on you. As pathetic as this sounds many police either do not know the law, or choose to hassle people over it anyway. If a police officer does hassle you for it, you can present the law to him.

Although this is what the IL state police website says, they have no authority to write or create their own laws. They would like your ammunition to be in a different location but there is no law that requires you to do so. They also claim it needs to be inaccessable and "locked". The ISP have been putting this propaganda out for a long time, it is not correct.

The law states,
Sec. 24-1. Unlawful Use of Weapons.
(a) A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons when he knowingly:
****
(4) Carries or possesses in any vehicle or concealed on or about his person except when on his land or in his own abode, legal dwelling, or fixed place of business any pistol, revolver, stun gun or taser or other firearm, except that this subsection (a) (4) does not apply to or affect transportation of weapons that meet one of the following conditions:

(iii) are unloaded and enclosed in a case, firearm carrying box, shipping box, or other container by a person who has been issued a currently valid Firearm Owner's identification Card;

No idea, but your back must be strong, it takes me 3 trips to the truck to get all the guns in when I go to the range.

Aurora Sportsman's Club is 300 yards from the first range to the last. I got myself one of the garden wagons with the all terrain wheels to haul all the gear from one end to the other. Even then it's a friggen workout.

I'm working hard to get myself to bring only one rifle and a couple pistols with one ammo can per trip...it doesn't work out well though.

The past couple months, I get out there around 10am, and don't leave till 4-5pm.

Yeah, I'm burning through ammo much faster than I figured. I killed 500 9mm last weekend working on double tap - headshot drills at 15 yards. I still suck!

I've been doing a lot of .22LR and Shotgun in it's place though.
