Not the first time someone has said something about the .50 cal, and been way off base. Sure it could be used in several ways for illegal activities, but let's break down the arguemnt based on dollars and sense:
1. The rifle alone is enough to make you have to file for banruptcy (ok not exactly, but since the anti's get to embelish a bit so do I).
2. The rounds for this thing aren't cheap either - XM33 is $7.01 per round.
3. The incindiary rounds are black market only items, so I am unable to give you an accurate price.
4. Optics for this will be pricey as well, because you will need not only range but shock protection. One example is the ATN .50 BMG daytime scope 12-36x80 - Cost $945.95 + base and rings.
5. Any target practice with this will definately draw a croud.
6. Who is going to lug this thing around with it's ammo? Yes I know when someone is determined.... just go pick one up at 22 pounds and try holding it level, let alone vertical.
7. When was the last time one was used in a crime? I can't recall once. I could be wrong.

I always laugh when people bring up this arguement, because they are ignorant about the subject matter. If you really want to push the arguemnt from their side, all 7.62X39 should be banned as well. Look how many pilots were shot with this round durring the VietNam war. I know I'm preaching to the choir to most of you who are reading this, but maybe this will help other folks to use some common sense.

Anywhere from $2K for a cheapo to $12K++ for a high end AI. That does not include the cost of the scope. You can buy the status quo Barrett semi-auto M107 for about $8.5K (again with no glass).

But the rifle and the scope are not the expensive part!! lol. Anywhere from $2.75 ('50's vintage French surplus) to $8.00 (match grade) a trigger pull makes it kinda pricey to "plink".

New manufacture armor piercing incendiary go for about $4.50 a round (quantity discounts down to $3.30 a round if you buy 1K rounds). Reman is slightly less. Full incendiary is about $5.50 a round.

$4.00 on the low end for ball ammo, any respectable shooter though is in the $7+ a round range

You can get all types of .50 ammo legaly. The only one in teh grey area are the ROFUS and SLAP rounds. Illinois has state law that restricts anything other than copper jacketed lead core bullets. What do you want? How much do you need?

ATN is junk. The average decent .50 scope will run you $1K plus. people like to think the budget ones work, but they don't

$4.00 on the low end for ball ammo, any respectable shooter though is in the $7+ a round range - Yes you can buy cheap ammo, but after dropping this kind of coin what's the difference in cost matter. If you want to actually take something out on the first try, why would you even consider the cheaper stuff?

Likes flies to shit - INDEED!

.50's dont get carried. you lay 1K meters from teh target and wait - My point exactly. However I did have to carry old Ma Duce in the Corps, so never say never.
