Appleseed 300!

For those who have been considering an Appleseed, or even more so for those who have already attended an Appleseed. They are hosting a HUGE event at Aurora Sportsman's Club. They are having instructors coming from all over the US, and they are using the 600 yard range to host 300 shooters at one event! And to add to that, Women, Children, Active Military *and* anyone who has attended an Appleseed event can learn for FREE!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Appleseed 300 info!

http://appleseedinfo.org/300.html

And Here’s the Bonus!

We are also offering this class FREE to ANYONE who has ever attended an Appleseed event. Just register online with the special code WM 300 AND bring proof of attendance at any earlier shoot to the registration table at the Aurora Sportsmen's Club. What counts as proof? An Eventbrite ticket receipt, a canceled check, or a scored AQT (Army Qualification Test) will all get you admitted to this event free of charge.

Those who do not qualify to attend this event for free will pay only $70 for the entire two-day class! And will recieve a certificate to attend their next Appleseed FREE!

Here is Peanut at her First Appleseed. She rocked through it and made Rifleman on the second day.

It took me a little longer to make Rifleman as it was raining when I went, and the cold just kicked the snot out of me. But it was a great experience, and you *really* learn to handle a rifle well. For the money (or for free!), I know of no better training experience for beginners.

Awesome! Lets try and meet up.

Did you guys reserve your spots at the link above?

Make sure you bring a rifle with adjustable sights (scope is OK if you absolutely need it - Brianne for example can't see very well), at least two mags, you *must* have a sling, a shooting pad (or sleeping mat or even just a blanket) because you *will* learn to shoot prone, and about 250-500 rounds for said rifle. Depending on the pace they are able to go, I've had weekends where I only used 150 rounds, and weekends where I shot 400 rounds.

Ruger 10/22 are awesome for this because they are inexpensive to buy and setup, and inexpensive to feed. Here is an older post by a well known Appleseed shooter that gives some examples of a Ruger 10/22 setup for an Appleseed event.

There are two days, and ladies shoot for FREE (just pay a $10 range fee).

First day is typically slower and goes over the basics, second day is some quick review and lots of "tests" and "games" to help work out any issues and practice your form.

Do you have a rifle? Or one you can borrow?

Welcome “300 Shooters”!

Thank you for pre-registering for this historic event on September 11-12. My name is Bill Essling (EEL on the RWVA forum) and I am the coordinator of this event. I am a Senior Instructor for the Appleseed Project and will be your liaison for this shoot. “Guy” will be your Shoot Boss.

We will open registration at 7:45 on Saturday. We have 300 shooters to process through so please come early. Our goal is to have the mandatory safety briefing at 9:00 and be shooting shortly after that. We will probably go until 5:00 P.M.. Sunday times are the same.

Weather permitting, parking will be on the range. You are to proceed along the north berm and follow the instructions of our volunteers. Simply nose into the berm as directed and proceed to the registration tables. Leave your rifles in the car. If you want to take all your other gear with as you register, that would be fine. Make sure you have a stapler and staples in your gear bag.

Throughout the weekend, there will be an enormous amount of information thrown at you. Instruction will continue during lunch. Don’t worry, it will all come together with the help of our 40 + instructors on hand.

Aurora Sportsmen’s Club is a private club, but is accepting members. Membership information will be available. They run a “cold range”. That is to say, no rifles will be loaded unless on the firing line and the “LOAD” command has been given. No pistols will be needed or allowed at this event.

Some logistical information for you before the shoot:

1. There is a $10 per person range fee for the weekend.
2. Lunch will be available from a local restaurant. $7 for a sandwich, chips and a drink.
3. Water and pop will also be available at a reasonable cost throughout the shoot.
4. We will raffle off a Marlin 795 rifle set up as a “Liberty Training Rifle” on Saturday.
The LTR will have Tech sights and a military web sling so it’s “good to go”!
Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00 This set up retails for $220.00
5. Many door prizes will be given away during the shoot.
6. Bring “Easy-Ups” for shade if you have them, folding tables for your gear, and chairs.
7. There will be a repair tent if you need minor repairs done on site.
8. Tech sights will also be available if you need to upgrade your rifle.
9. You may also want to visit our home page for additional information:
http://www.appleseedinfo.org/as_prepare.html
10. The Appleseed Store will also be on site if you want to purchase slings, stickers,
shirts, hats, etc. You can search this via our home page under “RWVA Links”.
11. If you need lodging, there are several hotels within easy driving distance.
See here: http://appleseedinfo.org/smf/index.php?topic=16334.0
12. To assist you in preparing for this event, see here:
http://www.appleseedinfo.org/as_prepare.html

The weather forecast is calling for “scattered storms” on Saturday and a sunny Sunday so bring your rain gear as well. There is no rain date. We shoot rain or shine.

If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. Looking forward to a fantastic weekend with a group of great Americans!!

Sincerely,
Bill Essling

Bri and I only went for the first day. It started with rain, so not everyone showed up (damn wimps), but brightened up and turned into a great (but Windy) day by noon. Around 200 shooters (by my count) showed up, even though it rained. It looked like most of them were pretty well equipped, and already pretty skilled shooters; I didn't really see that many newbs...probably 10:1.

By 6PM things were winding down and my allergies were just kicking the hell out of me, and I was getting a headache from shooting prone (neck craned) all day with some AKs around me. It was a very tight fit, most of us were bumping knees and catching brass on our glasses (we both have some brass burns to show for it). So at 6PM Bri and I left during the last history lesson of the day, and before the Optional qualification test (AQT). We are both already Rifleman, so this was just a refresher to make sure we are keeping our form, and maybe learn some new tips/tricks from trainers for other parts of the country. We also had to rush home and take care of the dogs, who had been crated since 7am.

My buddy Opel Blitz scored a 208 on the optional AQT, and he texted me that on the Sunday tests, his best score was 209, so he didn't yet make Rifleman (IMHO, he gets too worked up and doesn't relax enough to find his NPOA - he's actually a pretty good shot). I might not have gotten Rifleman as I was feeling like shit, but Bri easily would have gotten it. She was tearing ragged holes pretty much from the first target of the day.

I didn't take many photos. Most I took from my HTC EVO, just for the fun of it. I don't shoot photos well when I'm feeling like shit from allergies. It's hard for me to concentrate on the details and pull off good photos. Which I guess also relates to my mediocre shooting. I did tear some ragged holes, but I was not consistent enough to make Rifleman (though losing some weight helped me shoot crosslegged - it's much easier to plant your elbows without a gut in the way! ).

I wound up spending a good portion of Sunday in my hammock with the Pit Bull napping. It was a fair trade-off for shooting.

I'll copy some photos and probably video from the Appleseed forums once they get them posted up. I know some media was there to cover the event...one of the gripes that the Appleseed coordinators have had is that the media pretty much ignores them. This was too big of an event to ignore, though it wasn't exactly channel 7 news that was there.

you guys missed a great day sunday, started with a history and during you could hear drums off in the distance, then around the berm and all the way up the line marches a fife and drum corp in full costume with riflemen following in in minuteman and french regulars costume with brown besses and fired a volley for us, very moving

the local skydiving plane made an incredibly low pass at berm height and took areal photos of the event for AS

i was in squad 7 both days

i got my boss to go saturday with me

this was my 3rd AS, for my first 2 and saturday i ran irons trying to he-man my way to a patch, sunday i gave in and used an optic, it helped but not as much as i thought, i shot a 201 and a 204 sunday afternoon but the wind was really blowing, better luck next time i guess

each AS i have attended has been a little different from the previous one, all have been exceptional and totally worth the effort to attend

i will make at least one person come with to the next one i do

the new ASC is an awesome sight to behold, my boss is a member and i will probably join soon

Crap, don't tell Bri all that...she'd be pissed we blew it of (mostly for my sake). That all sounds pretty damn epic!

I'm sorry you didn't make Rifleman. Maybe next time. It's all about NPOA, no matter how you sight in.

Seriously though, Bri was almost in tears during the few moments of silence for 9/11. And I know Guy gets choked up when he tells the story of the men getting gunned down in the doorways as their children look on. He's a pretty good story teller, and you can tell Guy takes this very seriously.

That looks like about the half way point. There were just as many shooters behind the photographer as in front. Pretty impressive!

I will make a gentle suggestion here. When I was shooting IPSC they would make the suggestion to shooters not to wear camouflage anything to gun clubs or ranges. The media loves taking pictures of shooters doing precision shooting while wearing camouflage, scares the willies out of the general public. The gun club I belonged to had a dress code and asked members to refrain from referring to their sidearm, shotgun or rifle as a "weapon". Remember you are an ambassador for the shooting sports, so be aware how the general public perceives people in the shooting sports.
