Heirloom pistol

So I'm thinking of getting a gun as a wedding gift. I know, this doesn't bode well for my future. Watches and other jewelry are just a waste of money for the future Mr ill_ag, so I was thinking a great vintage or unique pistol would be a nice gift.
Problem is, I don't know jack squat about guns. I also do not have an unlimited budget.

Thoughts from the peanut gallery?

I would get the blued version, but yes, that would make any shooter a happy man.

What is your budget? Gotta start there and be honest because there are good heirloom type pieces in every budget range

Honestly I want to know the following:
(1) is this a good idea?
(2) is this worth considering in the $300-500 range?
(3) if I go slightly above my price range can I get something really worth the added expense?
(4) should I engrave it? (again, remember this is a wedding gift)
(5) what do I have to consider for licensing/purchasing, etc? Keep in mind I am currently in TX and will not be back in IL until 8 days prior to wedding.

I'd appreciate simple/non-jargon responses-- I really don't understand this stuff. I'm a total n00b when it comes to brands, styles, ... everything.

Thanks

1 - Yes - I got one as a wedding gift and cherish the thing. Rarely shoot it, but love it.

2 - Yes - You can get a real cool gift gun for that.

3 - No - stay in your price range, you can get real fancy and pricey, but if you jump above the 1k range then you start getting real quality.

4 - My advice is get the gun and then for an anniversary gift later you can add engraving as you go..

5 - This is a bit harder, where will you be living? IL? do you have FOID Card, does he have a FOID card?

We live in TX and will continue to live in TX.
I'm sure he has one but I don't know. And I want this to be a surprise if possible. I know his Dad could help with all that stuff, too.

I know he already has something like Rob posted. He's pretty into some of the old guns on Top Shot. Good lord I can't watch that with him but he loves it.

3-500? I really don't think so. Nothing that will really be special in the price range. Look at it this way, for that price you ar looking in the chevy sedan catagory, if you want to get him something special like a mercedes you will need to be in the 1500-2500 price range.

I think you may be going down the wrong road here. Have you given any thought to a threesome?

You guys are so full of shit. She isn't looking for a tactial entry gun, or a race gun, or some double barrel hand rubbed english sporting shotgun.

She is looking for a nice piece to give as a gift, that will most likely rarely be shot. A Momento...

Really, if it isn't worth the money, I won't do it. The whole post of this post was to get people's opinions, so I'm ok if y'all keep giving them!

I remember the first gun I ever bought was a 1978 12ga Remington Wingmaster for $300. It had 9X% blue, a real walnut stock and a 30" barrel. That would be a beautiful present. Too bad I sold it.

Rep!

Great find! Wild West era firearms aren't my forte, so I couldn't give solid recommendations, but what Paladin just pointed out would fit the bill perfectly!
