Paintball Questions?

Okay, Christmas is coming and my Nephews are wanting some paintball rifles. I need help finding out what a good starter set would be.

Brand? Model? Avg Price? Supplier? Pros/Cons, etc...

They are 11 years old, and one of them wants a sniper setup. Some of the rifles with gear that the wife was looking at was $700-$900. WTF? There has to be some better options out there for a lot less money for an 11 year old.

Thanks!
Jim

there is no such thing as a "sniper" paintball gun, least not in the sense of being a sniper

paintball is a game of relative inaccuracy and limited range, everyone is shooting the same ammo and 99% of games will not really allow for sniper type play

that saif look into NON electronic paintball markers they are cheaper and generally more reliable since theres less to go wrong on em

brands that have been around forever
sypder
tippman and their everlasting model 98

you should be able to put together a package consisting of marker c02 tank hopper and mask for like 250-300 or so

Thanks! I'll look into these.

My sister-in-law used the term sniper rifle. My first reaction to my wife was WTF? I could just see my nephew trying to take his time doing mil-dot range estimations and windage calcs before he squeezed the trigger......while simultaneously getting pelted with about 30 rounds from everyone else.

Oh yeah - do they have to be CO2, or can you use the compressed air tanks? We fill those at the dive shop, but I'm not sure what rifles they're used with.

yes you can use compressed air given the proper regularor and tank setup. however these are generally more expensive than a co2 setup

compressed air tanks run in 3 varieties and a phletora of capacities
3000, 4500 and most recently 5000 pis
3000 psi fills are generally available at fields these days higher pressures=less common

The Badlandz paintball field is a pretty cool place. I paintballed there a couple of times this year. Thanks Noodles!

This is the route I would go for a gift to a nephew, but I am a cheap fucker and your financial situation may be different.

+1 on the recommendations made thus far.

I own both a modified Tippmann 98 which I've beaten the living hell out of, and a Spyder. Both are great starter guns. My Tippmann is a "sniper package," meaning it has a CAR-15 stock (purely a cosmetic "cool-factor" enhancement) and what's called a flatline barrel. It imparts a backwards spin on the paintball, giving greater range at the cost of consistent accuracy... so really not truly "sniping."

The GroupOn coupon for Badlandz is a slick deal... I love that field and used to play there regularly when I played a lot.
