Buying a Used Beretta

I am looking at a few used Beretta 96's at Cabela's. They have 3 in their case, two for 299, and one for 349. The 349 is a Centurion with hogue grips. The Centurion is a shorter slide/barrel on a fullsize frame, and that's it, correct?

What should I be looking for to distinguish between the two that are 299, both show some holster wear, I did not look down the barrel. Just wondering what I should check for, what might be desirable or undesirable with these pistols.

Thanks for the help.

Holsterwear? In a non concealed carry state would lead me to believe they are police surplus. Which probably means theres a french fry in the barrel of at least one of them.

Do a quick field strip and check the mechanicals, you really cant go wrong with a berretta. I love mine!

Thanks for the reply, and before I waste anyone else's time I just picked up a mint cz 75 so disregard my original post. Sorry.

BTW the CZ is beautiful, doesn't even look like it was fired, or even taken out of the case. 379 at Gander

The CZ was just on a whole different level than the beretta's I was looking at at that price point. I see worse looking CZ's on Gunbroker for 450-550 so I couldn't walk away. Well I did, went out to the truck, called the wife and got the go ahead, and went back inside haha.

So, having lived in Italy for 2 years or so, in my experience sexy Italians are great an all, but the eastern euros with bad accents were more likely to do whatever perverted thing you asked of them (which may or may not have involved a clown outfit and a guinea pig).

They cost less to boot.

Just sayin'

Ok fellas I'm not much into this forum.BUT

As with any mass produced piece such as a gun. Some will assembly tight and some loose. These parts will all ways need some attention.Even a new High end gun can use a detailed over view.I believe all gun owners should be able to disassemble and have an idea of worn parts.

Buying a used gun is not something a beginner should venture into alone.

I know I'm the sensible old man that sounds boring, but keep in mind I'm just offering an experienced devils advocate point.

Oft-repeated, but incorrect.

The official report:
Quote:
Army testing officials told us that, while ammunition is always a factor that has to be considered, ammuni- tion is not the primary cause for the slide failures.
...
The Army is also pursuing the root cause of the metal fatigue that causes the slide to fail. As part of its efforts to identify the cause of the fatigue cracks, the Army is reviewing the process for heat-treatment of the slides. Prior to April 1988, all the slides were manufactured in Italy. Since that time, the slides have been manufactured in the United States. The slides that failed were manufactured in Italy;
The Italians had a bad batch of slides. Italians with less than stellar QC. Who'da thunk it?
