First Pheasant Hunting trip

Was hell. 4 dudes, no dogs, at Silver Springs. Brush was over my head and it was thick as hell. Managed to shoot one bird by myself it started to fly up around 20 ft in front of me and I took it down with one shot before anyone got their guns up. Spotted and flushed up another bird about 20 min later and the other 3 guys each took one shot at it. Saw one on the ground at the end of the day and tried to flush it up but it just ran away in the thick underbrush.

My legs were sore as hell at the end of the day. Going again Wed., with three dogs. :P

I'm hooked! Will try and not go w/o dogs though. :P

Oh, my mom made a beautiful Pheasant curry (she was in town for Thanksgiving). Both my parents really loved it and said she couldn't wait till I brought some more home!

My coworkers husband ownes one, great looking dog. He does not hunt, only got it because he is Hungarian.

I've been pheasant hunting without dogs, it sucked.

Yea I agree, I'm going to try my hardest to NOT hunt w/o dogs.. but you know, beggars can't be choosers!

Next year I'd like to try hunting deer in IL with my shotgun and then maybe after that try with a bow. We'll see how far it gets.. have to setup a reminder to register for a deer hunting tag.

I take my weims out to Silver Springs.

If you have a bad morning and can wait untill a little later in the afternoon, check along the fence in area D that runs N/S along the east border of the Farnsworth house. There is a corn field on the opposite side of the fence that flocks of birds seem to stop and feed before heading north across River Rd. into the really thick brush. 1-3 depending on the time of year is usually the time I see them.

Thanks for the infos, we decided to stay in Area A though. We had a slow morning only got 2 birds, missed a few (the wind was blowing harshly and the birds would take off!). We had a great afternoon though and managed to grab 8 more birds for a total of 10.

Pretty sure I'd never go hunting again w/o a dog.. sooo much easier!

No woods in area A. Just a few trees. I heard compared to other places the brush here is hellashish. It's over my head and thick. Will try DesPlaines next if I can. All the hunters I've met at Silver Springs have been ultra courteous though.
