Four teens were arrested following a weekend burglary at a suburban gun shop in which about 200 firearms were stolen, Chicago police said today.

Police said the suspects wanted to resell the handguns in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood as well as the suburbs.

Police said the weapons were stolen during a burglary early Sunday at the Maxon Shooting Supplies and Indoor Range in Des Plaines.

Dozens of the stolen guns had been recovered, police said, but they could not provide a precise number.

Trevell Allen, 17, of Blue Island, and Emmanuel Warner, 17, of Dolton, were charged with one count each of aggravated possession of multiple stolen firearms. Brandon McGee, 18, of Chicago, was charged with seven counts of unlawful sale of a firearm, while Darrell Holmes, 19, of Blue Island, was charged with one count of possession of a stolen firearm.

After the gun shop identified the weapons stolen during the burglary, Chicago police officers from the organized crime division learned the firearms may have been smuggled to the Englewood neighborhood, police said.

Officers executed a search warrant in the 6200 block of South Morgan Street and recovered 29 handguns, police said. Further investigation led officers to additional locations on the South Side and south suburbs, where 29 other guns were recovered, police said. The “majority” of those guns had been taken during the gun shop burglary, police said.

Police were still trying to locate most of the stolen guns.

A representative of the gun shop declined to comment when reached by telephone.

No kidding. Every shop up here locks the firearms up at night. Gander here even puts a sign in the display case stating that.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Obviously neither of you two have ever set foot in there. Maxon's is jokingly known as having the most guns per square foot in the Chicagoland area, because they're such a tiny shop. There is no place for them to "clear" their inventory and put everything into hard storage each and every night.

Do you expect a shop like Megasports to do the same thing? I don't think so. It is what it is and you do your best to secure your merchandise with what you have.

I'm more amused that you seem to think Maxon's is going out of business. They're actually in the process of finally building and opening a brand new facility.

Did they break in or rob them while it was open? You'd have to have some stones to rob them face to face. I don't know if they're loaded, but everyone behind the counter is carrying and there are cameras everywhere. Idiots.

It happened overnight Saturday night/Sunday morning... I'm not sure when. And yes, the staff all carry, locked 'n cocked.

The variable in safety vs. danger is the HUMAN factor. Guns don't kill or protect without a finger attached.

Nope, only about a mile down the road!

Des Plaines shooting range plans to expand, relocate
By Jennifer Delgado TribLocal reporter
Sep. 20, 2011 at 12:04 p.m.

Maxon Shooting Supplies hopes to move to 461 N. Third Avenue in Des Plaines but will need to apply for a special use permit first.

A Des Plaines shooting range has plans to expand and relocate to a bigger facility, though it will have to get approval from the City Council before the move.

Maxton Shooters Supplies, 1226 Rand Road, hopes to relocate less than a mile away to 461 N. Third Ave. The 20-year-old business, which also sells guns on the 4,000 square-foot property, is the only public shooting range in the city, officials said.

“We’ve got an influx of people who need security training,” said co-owner Barry Levin.

The business first needs to apply for a conditional-use permit to relocate its indoor shooting range to the 11,000 square foot site, which is located in a manufacturing district.

Though firearm sales were only allowed on certain commercial district properties, the Des Plaines City Council on Monday approved an amendment to a city-wide ordinance that would allow guns to be sold in a general manufacturing district.

The change also means that any businesses looking to operate an indoor shooting range will have to apply for a conditional-use permit, which would be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Zoning Board of Appeals and City Council.

The Des Plaines Police Department has its own shooting range, which recently was refurbished for $250,000, Police Chief Jim Prandini said.

The public shooting range facility would use soundproof material on the walls, similar to what police departments use, city documents state.

A shooting range received approval to operate in a larger facility with a conditional use permit. Maxon’s Shooters will move to 461 N. Third Ave., which is more than double the size of its current facility. It is the only public shooting range in Des Plaines.

Andy , I have been there a few times , but there is no excuse for not locking up the guns when you're in the gun business . Believe me , unless Maxons owners are heavily hooked up with the ATF , this is going to be a problem . I have a friend that was a gun dealer for over 20 year with a perfect record ,One of his employees did not fill out a monthly report properly , it took him almost a year to get his license back .

They just had a series of town hall meeting to get the new construction approved. If every goes well, they should be in a new place around November.
