Hunting Info....

I've never hunted before (besides small game like birds/squirel) but would like tko try.. I'm not exactly sure where to start though.. Where can someone hunt around here? What're the steps I need to take to do it (tags, etc)?
I see ads on craigslist every once in a while where someone will offer to let people hunt on their land for $1000 or something - is there a cheaper way to just give hunting a try for a newbie without spending that type of money?

I would like to hunt deer. I'd love to go boar hunting but obviously around here that's not really an option. I'd really be open to anything haha I just want to get some exposure to hunting.

Check the DNR website. Permits for the deer shotgun seasons will be opening up very soon. That is your first step.

Before buying a permit I'd like to know there's an affordable place I can hunt though. I'm not even sure where to start. Where does everyone else here hunt generally?

It depends what you have access to and what you want to hunt.

I have friends and family with land that I hunt on, but I will and have hunted public property. If you are looking to shotgun hunt deer and don't have access to private property, you would have to put in for a state site specific permit. There is no cost on the land, just the permit. If you have access to private property, you just need to put in for the county permit.

Read through the DNR site for hunting. Each state site has different regulations on what and how animals can be hunted. You can also download the hunting/trapping regulations off the DNR site.

This.

To the OP...Sounds like you do not have access to private land, so you will want to get a permit for a specific public location. Each location will have pluses and minuses and will be preferred to by some and despised by others. The only way to know is to visit a few that are within your distance requirement and hope the ones you chose will be granted to you.

Btw, permit fees are in the $20 range, and that is all it costs to hunt.

the $1000 you saw on CL is for use of private land and the person better show you video of some beastly bucks roaming his property before paying that kind of money.

There are some state DNR sites that allow deer hunting. Shabbona and Iroquois county are the ones I know of but there are others. I only hunt birds so I don't know the details on the deer hunting but I'm sure the DNR website has it. When I've been goose hunting at Shabbona during deer season the place is always packed with deer hunters. Shabbona is archery only for deer, don't know about the other ones. A deer hunter scolded us for having shotguns there hunting geese once .

Check out the site, there is a ton of public hunting areas to chose from. But as I said before, which one is better then the other, that is for you to decide.
