Emanuel to push for state-wide handgun registry

Emanuel to push for state-wide handgun registry

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants lawmakers to require that all handguns in Illinois be registered with the state, or gun owners could face felony charges.

A statewide gun registry is key in helping solve Chicago crimes that involve handguns from outside the city, and would also help crack down on gun trafficking, Emanuel is expected to argue Thursday.

This will make for another lawsuit that the NRA and the ILA will take up as well. This is just like the F.O.I.D. information that Madigan wanted to make public. Let's also not forget how well this very same legislature worked out for other countries......

Yes, it's all the damn suburban and rural handguns making their way into the city to shoot inner city gang bangers... makes perfect sense....

They don't forget that, they are well aware. But the Chicagoland dwarfs the rest of the state in pop density; why do you think there was chatter recently about Chicago becoming a 51st state Same reason I have yet to tint my car's windows as Chicago cops will still issue tickets for tint levels which are legal in the rest of the state under their stupid 'home rules' excuse.

It's this kind of politics the really brings people together. Da Mayor is really a healer, isn't he? Just more of the gangsta rule the people of Chicago asked for. He doesn't believe the gangs are gonna register their guns any more than you or I. He really wants the good people to be disarmed and completely dependent on him for protection. Registration is the first step, in their mind , to deter law abiding folks from owning handguns. How fast can the police get to you when you are being robbed or raped or shot at? How can you deter a maniac with even a knife, gun or blunt object that wants to do you or you family serious harm outside your home? What if you can't run? Criminals know this, and so does he. What a jag. People of Illinois, WAKE UP!!!!

You can't just carry any knife in Chicago anyway. That's regulated too. I see some truth in the statement about being dependent on his administration for protection but I think even more so he's pandering for votes to the clergy in high crime areas without having to redistribute police power from low crime areas.

This is the way mayors of Chicago have been seen to be tough on crime without really doing anything to reduce crime. In short, I think he's trying to warm voters and demonstrate legislative power more than anything.

I suspect this won't go anywhere. Maybe if this was done before the handgun ban was revoked but now you have honest citizens who legally posses within the city. This is going to activate them because they've just taken all the classes within the last year or so. Guns and gun ownership is new to them.

I think it's going to be another Rahm slapdown.

He's just been slapped down a few times in the past month or so.

1. His recommendation to restrict protesters for the G8/NATO summit was watered down significantly.

2. His lawsuit defense against the 2003 Iraq war protesters was killed just yesterday. Now the city is in a pinch. The ruling compels the city to issue permits for demonstrations if requested. The city can not deny a reasonable permit. If it doesn't issue a permit then attempts to control protests will be even more limited.

3. Despite all his talk that he's bringing big business to Chicago he just lost Aon HQ to London. The Aon board of director's vote was a closed session private vote so we won't ever know which key Chicago figures agreed to this. Remember, these people are MAJOR Chicago boosters and some were significantly involved with Millennium Park construction and the flopped Olympic bid. I suspect this defection is an affront to Emmanuel's leadership.

It'll never fly. I remember when Blagojevich was running for Governor he was wanting to charge a stupid high amount to have a foid card. The NRA stepped in and that was scrapped. The guy is blowing a lot of smoke and the people of Illinois won't stand for it.

Instead of all this nonsense they should just issue out 1 cop to every citizen. That's the only way i'm gonna feel a little more at ease with these bs laws. There really is no other way to drastically reduce crimes at an instant.

Did ya read that article in the Trib yesterday about Emmanuel? The reporter is simply asking him if he's issued a city cell phone or uses email. If the answer is yes then the reporter wants to FOIA those. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...0,265276.story

Emmanuel dances around the issue. He knows if he says yes, they'll file the request and then you and I will learn who really called the shots with the city sticker flop.

It's a simple thing. You use ANY public equipment to communicate and it's subject to FOIA. Essentially, anything you do as a public official is subject to public disclosure.

That's why I don't understand this whole, can't tape a cop law. I mean, anything a public servant does on behalf of the public good is open and subject to review.

This is essential to a free society. Look what happens when that isn't the case: Syria. The govt twists things so much no one knows who is causing all the trouble, the cops or the rebels.
