Thoughts on a H&K MP5

I was thinking of an AR-15 build, but I'm not one for the everyday anything. I really like the 9mm cartridge, and having a weapon that shoots a pistol cartridge would get a lot more use than a rifle cartridge. I can use a MP5 at indoor and outdoor ranges. I live in a state that allows short barrel rifles, supressors, and full auto weapons, so why not get all three. Keeping it simple is the number one thing, less is more. So this weapon will have a scope, and thats about it. It will also be used (in single shot mode) for home defense, along with my Glock 19. Thoughts? Suggestions?

The rifle will cost about $4k, the auto sear about $15k, suppressor around $1k these don't take reddots very well (odd claw mounts) and a scope is just ridiculous. Tax stamps will run $200/ea. for SBR and Suppressor transfer.

All in all, very cool weapons but expensive as shit and hardly worth it IMO - I'd much rather have a 10.5" Semi Auto SBR AR15 for home defense, total cost $2k for EVERYTHING than a $23k MP5. Ten years ago MP5s were great deals, now, not so much.

EDIT: Just checked prices.

Rifle itself - $9k+ total build will be more than $30k unless it's well used.

Sturmgewehr is awesome for NFA stuff too.

Dave, these are cool guns but they're absolutely not worth it- the F/A stuff is just a waste of ammo for the most part.

I must be way off. I do not want to build a 35k weapon. What I want is a short rifle with supressor that shoots 9mm and can be upgraded to full auto. Even with the supressor, it must be a short weapon. I looked at this on gun broker.

Is it possible to build a short AR15? Seems like that is the biggest bang for the buck (no pun intended).

Way off is right. lets clear one thing up right now.
NO FIREARM CAN BE LEGALY CONVERTED TO FULL AUTO FOR CIVILIAN POSSESION.

Aabout all firearms can be converted to full auto but they would only be legaly for a limited audience. Any full auto weapon that can be legaly transfered to a civilian would have had to have been a registered full auto as of May 19, 1986. reference teh FOPA act for more details.

As per the gun broker ad:

" Originally an H&K 94 9x19mm NATO, converted to MP5 N “Navy” Model, in Like New (Excellent) condition, by Phil Flack of PF Customs, in Asheville, North Carolina. This is a registered Class III Short Barreled Rifle (SBR), and can only be legally transferred thru a Class III Dealer. "

So basicaly someone bought a Ford Cobra ( HK94) and then worked it to become a GT500 clone( MP5N Clone). So while it may be as close to GT500 as possible it's still just a clone... not a factory build. And you still have the Super Snake ( factory MP5 full auto) that trumps them all which will require you to bring top dollar to the show.

Arrogance has to be earned.

See what I wrote in my 1st post. There's the recipe for what you want at a savings of thousands. Thats why I refrenced the fact you couldl build all thsi with the money that a host gun (HK94) would cost and still get "full auto like" results with teh slide fire stock.

Ponch, thank you very much for the help. I was hoping you would chime in on this thread. So if I wanted full auto, I would have to buy a pre-ban item, correct? I'm still learning the laws conserning this. Full auto isn't a big deal, and considering that it jacks the price way up, it is not needed for this build. That weapon you posted the link to looks pretty nice. I don't like the front grip, so that would have to go. Looks like the AR platform will be the route I will go considering what I want to spend for this rifle.

Correct, if you want full auto it would be a used "pre-Ban" gun. Pre ban is such a generic term now a days it's a joke. To be exact the full auto gun would have to be pre the 1986 ban. So at minimum you are getting a 26 year old firearm.

And let me tell you, the majority of teh full auto weapons you see for sale have been beat to shit by there owners over the last 4 decades. To get something with "low miles" will require you to bring some serious coin. A "clean" in my opinion MP5 will run 18-20K

And btw.... then you have to worry about if the gun is a conversion or a factory full auto

Arrogance has to be earned.
