Very true. In a self defense class where we did some basic knife skills, the teacher had us do a "test" that was sort of a reality check. We repeated our knife fight sparring usually done with those blue rubber knives, except used markers so we can go back and review the hits (cuts).

Most of the damage was forearms, then hands and upper arms, and believe it or not, upper legs, *then* actual torso kill shots. Very few face cuts unless it was intentionally targeted. Even with the very skilled students and teachers, nobody walked away unscathed. I'm sure there could be exceptions with some seriously aggressive martial arts and surprise on your side...but few and far between.

Honestly, knives scare me more than guns.

If you are not too good with the Dragon technique or the Monkey, you should have thought outside of the box, and grabbed the instructors telephone and swung that into your opponents head.

With knives, kill shots rarely do the immediate trick. It may take minutes for someone to bleed out and many times that person is still able to move at you and attack with the same gumption they had before the kill shot.

Instead of stabs to vitals you should be thinking slashes to key mobility tendons in the leg and arms (if armed).

Then evade and escape. Live to fight another day.

I don't know. Everything I've heard is that if he has his hands around your neck and he takes a good stab he can stay with you long enough to cut off your air.

Game over for both.

In my experience people that attack you are usually not acting rationally. Some might be kicking up a high that you can't stack up against. They might not even know they are stabbed. Swing at a tendon and pull their arm off you is all I'm saying.

That's exactly how we were taught. We practiced some Filipino style where you strike the weapon hand when they are attacking you, then move in after opponents weapon has been disabled.

I took some classes at one point too. Man, I would not want to be in a real knife fight. I'd rather run! They taught us to size up our opponent by how he's holding the knife, but never underestimate. Then to deflect his moves, and strike key tendons after deflection.

Having had to recover from a soft tissue injury before I can tell you it's a miserable experience! I'd take broken bones over that any day!

I'll bet Vern has a variation on this technique called "monkey eats the peach...and squirts the peach juice all over his face".

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."
