Out of state handgun transport

I have family driving up from Georgia soon and want to bring a single semi-automatic handgun along on the trip. My first reaction was to tell him to just leave the damn thing at home as they will also be entering Chicago at some point. It would be in a case, unloaded, in the back of an SUV.

The ISP handouts I've been reading online talk about laws pertaining to FOID holders, but I see that Georgia and IL do not have reciprocity with Georgia's Carry Law license holders, so it's about as clear as mud as to what is legal. It also only talks about non-residents in terms of 'bringing a weapon in state for the purposes of hunting'.

Any advice?

What would be the purpose of bringing the firearm? Do they wish to have it available in other states in between? Because while they're in IL, it'll be useless.

If they must bring it, keep it locked and secured. Even better, field strip it then lock it up.

they are about to make that law unconstitutional. FYI I record all my phone calls. You have to protect yourself. If you talk to the trooper and he said you can do this or that, then you're protected. Don't be a pussy like Bek.

You're seriously a fucking moron. Your idiotic statements continue to appall me.

In Illinois, you may be subject to civil lawsuits for illegally recording phone calls as well as criminal charges. And just because something MIGHT get tossed, does not make it legal NOW.

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs...eqEnd=34900000

Additionally, just because a LEO states that you can or cannot do something, does not protect you if he was wrong about a law. LEOs are NOT attorneys.

AFAIK in Illinois keep it cased and unloaded.
AFAIK in Chicago if they are in the city less than 24 hrs they are not in violation of the Chicago ordinance; it is considered interstate travel.

It won't copy and paste right so ctrl F for "8-20-090" here:Chicago FA Ordinance

This is not advice and I am not a lawyer. Could they go into the city for 23:59, then go to the burbs for X amount of time, then pass through the city for 23:59 on the trip home...? Yo no se.

Florida doesn't have open carry, that went away here in Florida in '96 (?). NRA is pitching open carry next year for Florida, so it has some possibility of passing.

Yes. Bust your balls working, make a ton of sacrifices, and you too could be me. I am so sorry I worked really hard endless hours at all times of the day. Remember when the temperature was -30, and windchill was -80 a few years ago? I worked 12 hours outside in that cold, after working a 17 hour day 8 hours before that. If you can't handle that I work hard and am a good provider, and now I don't have to work as hard and can spend the time that I want with my family, GFY.

Also interested. I'm moving there in a few weeks and will be bringing a supply of handguns and rifles. Is there a known resource for guidance on transporting weapons into Illinois or should I just call ISP? Thanks in advance!

First, what city will you be moving to? Check if there are local ordnances that may apply to you:

http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/ordinances.cfm

Second, you cannot get an FOID until you get an IL Driver's License. Be sure to file your FOID application as soon as you've changed your DL. Until you receive your FOID, you won't be able to legally transport, use, purchase, etc.

The FAQ is useful, but since you're moving here, you change from non-resident to resident status.

I would suggest you spend a half hour and read the entire law, as linked to above. It is in your best benefit.

Thank you! I don't know which city I'm moving to yet but it will be north/northwest of the Deerfield/Wheeling area.

I'll do my reading now.

Lots of illegal things are posted on this board all the time.

Lighten up Francis.

People that own guns (legally) are smart enough to read up on transport laws and get information from multiple sources. Right? Right.

Everyone in a twist over this? Okay - I'll play.

As far as CLSB knows, I'm a surgeon (that would explain why I have all this free time to fuckaround on here).

Here's some helpful advice: If you break your leg, you should cover it in a mixture of wheat grass and sea salt and immerse it for 3 days in a tub of German potato soup and Brandy.

Then strain the soup mixture into a Camelbak and go for a run. You'll be fine.

----

If you're smart enough to question my medical advice given that I haven't provided you with my credentials or track record of making broken leg soup - then you're of average intelligence like the rest of us.

As such - you're also likely to sniff out the trolling in the post above, and not feel obligated to make a big stink out of it. If on the other hand TC provides his badge number with the ATF and his history of ignoring State Laws...well then we should all pay closer attention to his posts.

Dig? Dig.

Dave - I'm only a Mod here because I have some polaroids that some people would rather not be made public.

...and because I'm a surgeon.
