We have recently become aware of a deplorable situation in Plainfield, Illinois that deserves our attention and YOURS! One month ago a gentleman and his fiancé contacted a local sporting goods store to inquire about their availability of ammo, specifically, for a pistol and an AR-15. She wanted to go to the range to shoot her firearms and of course was in need of ammunition to do so. If you are not aware of Illinois law, it states that any resident must have a valid FOID card. But it also states in the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act (FOID Card Act). 430 ILCS 65/2(b)(10) (West 2004). Under the FOID Card Act, an out-of-state resident who possesses a valid permit or license from his state is not required to obtain a FOID card. This was upheld by their own Supreme Court in April, 2011.....

That is where ours story begin; two United States Marines walked into Mega Sports in Plainfield, Illinois... she is a resident and he is not. Both have valid state ID's and their Military ID, and she, as a law abiding citizen of Illinois has a valid FOID card.

From the account of the story, both were approached upon entering the store and asked for their ID's. Upon seeing his VALID military and out of state ID, he was told that he would have to sit and wait while she was allowed to shop. This wouldn't be that big of a deal, except he had driven her to the store for a reason, she was recently injured in a line of duty accident, which shattered her Tibia, Fibula, and heel. She has since had corrective surgery and is recovering but still can not drive with a broken leg.

Now, the real clincher.... When she FINALLY made her way back up to the counter, she was denied the sale. The cashier decided she didn't look like she could shoot, and that it was obvious that she was instead purchasing it for her fiancé. He stated that she didn't look like she had ever handled a firearm in her life.

When our 12 year veteran explained that this was NOT the case, AND that she was a FOID card holder, which meant that she had every right to purchase it, he again refused her the sale and told her to leave the store.

She did, and once they left they attempted to call the manager, his only reason for the refusal of the sale was that they must have a valid FOID card.

That is fine, but ONLY an Illinois state resident can obtain a FOID card. PERIOD. Its not available to those who are not legitimate residents. Our military are NOT required to change their state of residence while they are stationed out of state. Not to mention, she DOES have a valid FOID card so the justification the manager provided was not only irrelevant, but it didn't make sense.

This is a woman who has fought in a war; a Marine, 3 times awarded expert shooter with the M16 and M9 Beretta, was a squad leader for a Female Engagement Team in Helmand Province Afghanistan, has her picture in the Marine Corps Museum in Quantico, Virginia, supports her local community through Toys for Tots, Veterans Funeral Honors, Honor Flight Coordination, and is attached to a special forces in Joliet, Illinois and yet, she was denied a FUNDEMENTAL RIGHT of every American, the right to keep and bear arms. Sure, she just wanted to go shoot at the local range, but she was denied ammunition. THAT is the item that makes a firearm usable, makes her capable of protecting her home, her person and her life. THAT is why we are asking for your help.

We at 1 Million Moms Against Gun Control can NOT stand by while civilians are treated in such a way, but for our own servicemen and women to be treated with such blatant disregard, rudeness and insensitivity is beyond our comprehension. In addition to the sexist remarks and disbelief that a woman can or would use a firearm, to the ignorance of their own state laws, this store needs to be informed that we WILL NOT accept this type of behavior without speaking up.

You can not treat our servicemen and women like they are not citizens deserving of utilizing their rights and not be called out to answer for it. We want you to take a few minutes and print out the letter and send it to the store and to headquarters.

If this is just a rude store employee, it needs to be addressed. If this is their policy, it needs to be changed. And if THIS is how they will treat our own heroes, then we need to know about it and act accordingly!

Here is the petition that we are asking you simply print, sign and send.

Story has all the tells of fiction.

Two Marines, one injured (dramatic description of injury and justification for story), atrocious treatment by a store (which had no reason to do so.....since they probably deal with an identical situation daily of one person not having a foid card.), and a demand for action against said store.

It's either fake....or not the whole story.

yep my thoughts too...

and since when has anyone ever been asked for ID just for going into a store, especially one that sells numerous other products that dont require any indentification to purchase

This is a store policy of theirs - no one gets in without a FOID card. They have a bouncer at the front door checking for these, and a camera set up right there so someone can apply for a FOID without getting into the retail area of the store.

This story might just be true.

My friend purchased a RRA AR15 from Mega, 2 weeks later he went in to buy a S&W .22 AR and was denied the sale and asked to leave because he had a friend with him - they said he was intending to buy it for his friend. They both have FOID cards and this was not the case. He contacted me and we called Mega, the manager apologized and gave him a nice discount.

I was shocked when he told me happened, so the story above has merit, I will never shop there.

sounds like they are taking this alittle to serious. I hope they have enough business that they can afford to assumptions. So who is up for alittle covert operation to test this and get it recorded :O)

I know one maybe two people in this thread posting should move on back to the airsoft thread where a psycho test isnt required

go time traveler style and go back in time, fuck his grandma, then shoot forward in time and then fuck his mom. Then return back to present state and call him a the product of two incest whores and hes your son and show video of you plowing the both members of his family. .

They only allow Illinois residents to shop in their store? That's insane. I could have anything shipped to a FFL here in Florida for pick up, making the sale perfectly legal. Same with handling a weapon, I don't need a FOID being a resident of Florida. I'm curious enough to place a call to them later today. I'll report back with what they say.

It is true they won't let anyone in without a FOID card now. Honestly I don't see anything really wrong with that. You need a Foid card to even touch the weapon. From what I heard the owner is just paranoid about someone getting a gun from his store and then having the press after him once a crime is committed. Think he is just trying to cover his own butt. If I owned a store I would probably feel the same way. The other issue they had was the store was packed. They were closing down the store a while back during the middle of the day to clear it out then open it again a hour or two later. Heard you couldn't even move inside the store it was that packed!

I do think that's bull about them refusing sale though if that's true.

MS is less than 2 miles from my house. I don't even go in there in anymore. Guess I don't feel like being treated like a common criminal.

If the owner had a f'ing clue he would have set up his new facility to have all merchandise that doesn't require a FOID card on one side of the store (say the south side) with it's own entrance. That way folks that want to buy a holster or targets or clays or whatever don't have to go through the security pat-down. Then the other side do his security checks. And don't forget: NO CELL PHONES!!!

Sorry but those guys are raging dickheads. Unfortunately peeps keep shopping there. Every time I drive past the place is packed. I just don't understand why you'd want to deal with some pimple faced punk that *thinks* he knows firearms or some jagg-off washout cop manager that has a giant chip on his shoulder.

If you have a Foid you can do what you want (within limitations). For them to deny purchase of a firearm because the female did not "look like she could shoot" is irrelevant. The state authorized this person to have this right, and it's not up to a private store to deny that. I would sue for discrimination and really stick it to them. If they "FELT" that she was trying to straw the firearm for the boyfriend that is not up to them to decide but the ATF to investigate and she would be severely dealt with. I don't even care about the "Military aspect" I'm just focusing on the legalities of it.

I've gone there for a few items but I don't care for this place personally. I prefer Gat Guns, I feel they treat you as a client not a dollar sign, from my experiences at least.

MS is expensive to shoot at, and while the range is nice I don't feel that the premium is worth it. There firearms cost more than most places, along with just about everything else.

I think it's rubbish to check for a Foid card, that's the cashiers job anyways or the person at the gun counter. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to card people at the door.

The dumb thing is that they check for the FOID again to handle a gun and of course to make a purchase. What's the point of checking at the door if you're just going to check it again?

Anyone ever thought about a picket line in front of the store? They cant stop you from walking on the sidewalk. From the reviews on google looks like the original story could be very much true.

And what the hell could they do to anyone who does use their cell? Only thing they could do is ask them to leave.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

They are taking the straw purchasing stuff overly seriously. Then again, if they implement policies such as the ones they are doing, no one is going to place responsibility on them (hopefully).
