Silencers...

Can anyone give me a good educational site for national law vs. state laws? I suppose I'll learn all this when / if I enroll in the concealed carry program, but it's on mind NOW... and it may be a year before I enroll...

Are silencers legal?
Is it a national or state thing?
Do silencers effect accuracy?
- in terms of "tent camping" protection & animals... yeah, that's it!

In my opinion, If one needs a silencer, than chances are they are breaking more laws than just that one

But yes I believe they are illegal on a federal level.

They are very illegal. You can read about them for educational purposes, but can't make or use them!

Here is a quick explanation for ya.

Under federal law supported by the National Rifle Association, A second conviction, if the firearm is a machine gun or is equipped with a silencer, brings life imprisonment without release.

This piqued my interest mostly because I saw pics of a guy in Mexico (yeah - not the US) shooting his PC with a silenced 9mm...

It got me thinking about this... and my EX-Wife!

So, yeah Tony... more than one...

There are lots of "homemade" silencers out there that work as well.

Down side to a real silencer is you must have a threaded barrel. That alone will end you up with bubba at the pokey!

Ya know thats something that struck me as odd. I was over at a local gun shop and they had an HK, sitting there in the cabinet with a threaded barrell. I was wondering if that was illegal.

The are alot of states that allow the use of/ purchase of supressors
Connecticut being one of them
They are legal with a ATF Form 1 $200 tax stamp and a 4 month wait, cleo sign off

And there are alot of legal reasons to own one

ps My HK tactical has a threaded barrel and its legal except in CA

Tony, if you mean an HK handgun with a threaded barrel than that's ok. handguns fall into diffrent criteria.

Supressors are legal and are restricted only through state law. Illinois being one that prohibits both silencers and full auto firearms.
Whoever mentioned about the $200 dollar tax stamp is correct, in addition to that you must have a letter from the police cheif of the town you live in in order to apply for it b4 you can have it. Also you leave your self open to federal inspection at ANY time. This is the price you have to pay for Class 3 firearms and accesories.

Arrogance has to be earned.

and stop calling them silencers, they are suppresors!!! Nothing silences a firearm, it just quiets them down. That's why they are rated in decibels!!!!!!

You do not need the CLEO signature if you start a corporation and buy it thru the Corporation, just a tip for getting around a Non-NFA friendly CLEOs

I doubt anyone here is going to do that. Strating a Corp. in Illinois would still be worthless, at least for full auto.
I don't know what the loop hole for the suppresor would be or in what state you did your research but then again I don't think there all that.
To me a high powered rifle with a good shooter behind it is much more dangerous.
