what does it take for a FTF transfer

I saw the transfer slip but I wasnt sure if there was anything else involved in the process that needed to be done.

Assuming your an Illinois resident with a Valid FOID card and the seller is a MIchigan resident this is what has to be done to complete a LEGAL transfer.

1) You need to find an FFL dealer here who will transfer the firearm. They charge a transfer fee that ranges from $25-$50. There is no set fee and a dealer can charge you whatever they want.

2) After that FFL is set up they will send the seller a copy of their license or a copy of their FFL # so that they can then run against the FL EZ check system to verify that the person they are shiping the handgun to is an FFL dealer. You must specify that the shipper will be a private party, not all FFL's will accept from a private party.

3) once the seller has verified the FFL dealer he MUST ship the handgun via next day air to the FFL. There is no way around this and it is costly. About $45-$65. From Michigan to Illinois I would say $45. Included in the package the seller should include a copy of his DL to aid in loging in teh irearm on the FFL side.

4) once the FFL has recieved the handgun he logs it into his books and then can begin the process of transfering to you. The transfer process is the same as if you had purchased it from the FFL. 3 dau waite on teh handgun, NICS check and bill of sale.

The only time I recommend doing transfers is when

1) you can buy the gun for pennies on teh dollar
2) it's a gun no longer made

As dealers and private parties arent always WELL versed on the law t becomes very sticky doing this.

The easieast way to do a state to state is just to have the seller take the handgun to a dealer in Michigan, then the dealer in Michigan ships to the dealer in IL. Then that dealer transfers to you. So do teh math

Firearm Price + Shipping + shipping = your total cost

You can always negotiate prce wih the seller and sometimes they will include shipping in teh sale price but you better make sure you ship leagly and that the recieveing FFL is ok with the methods and all the inormation required by your FFL is somethin that your seler is willingto sell and all the information your FFL is willing to give is acceptable by your seller.

Gets very confusiong after a while!

Yes it does get complicated!

Thats why you were the first person I came to ask!

Would it be easier if I Moved to my inlaws for a week. (change Foid address) complete transaction FTF w your transfer slip. Then move back to IL. (just a random Idea)

when I want to JR shooting they said FFL was around 70$ and they wanted 912 for the handgun OTD w/ 1 Mag.

Edit,

To become a resident of a state you have to show proof of adress for 90 days and have your ID switched over. Not worth teh time or effort to save money.

Was this in a For Sale add? I know I can get you a transfer for under $50 in Plainfield. If it's a FS add give me the link and let me see if I can negotiate shiping into the guys price

Ah, VERY good to know just for general knowledge that legal requirements to claim residency.

Supposedly Gander mountain only charges 35$ so i am going to call them when they open in ten minutes

I know he is taking a big hit on the gun already. so 675 + 35 FFL will be worth it to save us both drive time as well.

again, I want to say thank you for helping me out with this, I want to enter this sport flawlessly

Private Party. But he went through his FFL to get it to Gander and ate the shipping on his end. The long story short, $1750 for the gun with what you see plus another $36.99 on my end to transfer over
