Researching a rifle's history?

I've got a rifle that I would like to find out its history on but I don't know where to even start.

My Father-In-Law passed away in January, an ex-Marine, and I now have his Springfield M1-Garand .30-06. It has a new stock, but I have the old one that still has the armory rack numbers on it. I know it wasn't the one he had while he was still in the Marines, but I would like to find out more about it.

Any links, or help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm jealous, I'd love to end up with an M1 Garande.

Nice. Too bad you got it that way, but an M1 Garand is really at the top of my list of rifles that I must own.

It is a Springfield model?

Stamped in the receiver is:
U.S. RIFLE
CAL. 30M1
SPRINGFIELD
ARMORY
XXXXXXX (serial number)

I didn't have a chance to ask him about it before he passed away, so I don't know anything about its history. I'm looking forward to warmer weather where I can take it out a see how well it shoots.
