Antique Firearms (Where to Sell)

I've inherited a flintlock Liege and Baldwin double barrel shotgun dated from the American Revolution or maybe even earlier (French Indian?).

This came from a friend of a friend so it isn't sentimental or anything so I'd like to sell it. We've taken it to the Antiques Roadshow and they told me what I already knew which was the period/era and the approx price.

I've called up a few auction houses in Chicago and they don't specialize enough in these types of items to take on the job. They transfer me to their housewares depts but I was thinking a serious gun collector would be interested not someone who wants to decorate a north shore fireplace.

I have an idea of a minimum value based on similar items I've been watching on the web. In fact I'm in coomunication with a fella in CT who I believe can tell me a lot about it but wants a $150 appraisal fee and I wouldn't want to ship it to him. In fact, I'm not even sure how to ship if I wanted to do that. So that option isn't realistic.

Any ideas on local people who can tell me more about this item or help me sell it? I know that Liege is still making shotguns today but I can't find their corporate website (international). Can anyone help with that?

The pics suck but you get the point.

Well, what range would you expect something like this to sell for?

Haha, you got it appraised!

It's very pretty and I have a coworker who's into this stuff, I'd like a ballpark figure to run past him. I have no idea what it's worth, but it sure is nifty.

Actually, I didn't get it appraised. Like I said the fella I know is in CT and I don't feel comfortable shipping it to him.

Right now I'm looking for a local appraiser and a local seller. Preferably not the same entity in order to maintain some impartiality.

However, if you or your friend are interested please PM me and I'll post my offering price. If you are not interested in that price then maybe you can refer me to an appraiser or buyer?

PM sent, also, you might want to try AR15.com, there is a separate Curio&Relic section on the Equipment Exchange and you might find a local appraiser in the Hometown section.

dont sell that thing to anyone just yet, all its doing as time goes by is perhaps gaining value!

from what it looks its all original.

it might be worth thousands!!

look up the (rifleman show) there is a short fat guy that always does whats this gun worth and is a professional firearm historian. he might be able to help you in some fashion or contact locally.

dont let that thing out of your site. (otherwise is doesnt go off anywhere unless you are attached to it) way to many people fucked this way.

Handguns are a no no. You can still own these things in Chicago. Heck you can even stock a shotgun.

And yes, it has 2 flints and as far as I can tell it 100% original.

I'd keep it but valuable material items scare me. I grew up in a house that always flooded so I'm a bit paranoid about things getting damaged. I'd much rather have the cold hard cash and then sink that into something that pays money.

As far as I know you cannot... Just to be on the safe side.. I would say publicly that it is not in your place in the city that you are keeping it with a friend.... Assuming it still could possibly work....

I remember years ago seeing on Fox News how they busted some guy in chicago with over 100 guns.. THey sent in ATF, FBI, SWAT the whole deal.. They had news grews there and everything.. When they went in and got the guy he looked like he was maybe 75-80 years old.. Then they showed the guns... with the police holding them up like trophys.. old flint locks, muskets (remember the old musket with the flaired out barrel... one of those) they named off a few being from french revolutionary war, 1812, etc... Then they said they were going to take them all to the steel mills and have them melted down... I couldn't believe it.. It literally made me sick to my stomach.. The cops were going thru the pile with the cameras on them and posing with them the way they do when they bust someone with 1000lbs of cocaine ...

So in any case.. you may be right.. but if I were you.. I wouldnt have it in the city.. It's just not worth it if someone decides to make a cause of it.. It could end up destroyed...

Judging by the thread about the AR15 you are guilty till proven innocent.. and in Chicago.. that applies 10x moreso...

Just me

I know what the Chicago laws are and trust me you can own a shotgun and I can own and store this particular firearm as a Chicago resident. I can verify this with my ATF and CPD collegues (and previous bosses).

The old dude who had all those antiques was certainly up to more than were were allowed to know about or what was posted above.

My Great Great Great Grandfather's 1873 Springfield Rifle hasn't left Chicago since he was honorably discharged in 1879. No one's ever questioned it and I've had cops over for breakfast. Of course that's not serviceable as the stock is cracked from combat.

Springfield rifles aren't worth that much (about $800) because there are so many of them left around. I still have his cavalry sword stamped 1865 though its missing the gold tassles which disintegrated about 40 years ago. Leather grip is brand new looking though. Paperwork? There wasn't anything of the sort back then as he was a prisoner at the Andersonville Confederate Death Camp when he was discharged the the 1st time.

I got it. But now that I think of it, it's missing a flint so it really isn't a 2 round, "full auto."
