Transporting Firearms on an Airplane

Has anyone done it? Got any tips/suggestions?

I read the site here. http://www.southwest.com/travel_center/guns.html

I have a decently sized pelican case that I will use to transport my rifle (broken down).

both me and my wife and brought pistols and rifles and shotguns through the airports.

just make sure they are:
-broken down
-the case has a lock on it
-no ammo in the case
-no magazine in the weapon (yes even though it is broken down.)
-no ammo in the magazine.

you have to check in at the ticket counter so you cna declaire you have a firearm and they will tag your wepons casees with a firearms tag and you are all done.

you pick them up with the rest of your bags at the turn styles. and go about your bussiness.

last time they didnt even look at the weapons to make sure they were broken down they just said umm ok. and put a tag on the case.

Make sure you have a hard waterproof case, and the weapons do not need to be broken down, just unloaded with no ammo in the same case. You can lock your case once it has been inspected and tagged by TSA. Do not let it go unlocked and always stay with your case until it goes down the luggage shute. If you are using a pelican case, make sure your air valve is open prior to you locking the case, otherwise it will probably get damaged when the plane pressurizes.

There is also a limitation on how much ammo you can take as well. I found this out the hard way when I went to a shoot and had ammo for 2 weapons same caliber but over the limit for the regs. I think they confiscated 250 of 500 rounds I had packed.

You can UPS a firearm, but it has to be done from FFL to FFL which is about $35.00 on each end, not including the actual shipping costs and the hassle of arranging for a FFL on the other end to accept.

Her's a helpful link: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...rial_1666.shtm

While they do say you can pack ammo in with the firearm, it does have to be in another hard case. I have always been told to pack it seperately, but to each their own. It does also say to check with each airline to see if there are any other stipulations they have regarding transportation.

you dont ups or usps a firearm just as devil dog said only an FFL can send a firearm through the mail system.

its really about being clear. cuz if you just say ups it or mail it that dosent really help anyone as they can not just put it in an envelope and drop it off in a mail box.

i believe southwest wants the weapons "in a non functional state" no definetion for that givein so i would assume disassembled would be a non functional state. but i have done it both ways but after all dissassembled is always the safer way to go rather then haveing to disassemble it right there at the counter. the less peopple have there eyes on my the contents of my lagguage the safer it is for me to ensure i get my laguage at my destination vs. someone trying to steal my bag.

You are a lucky SOB. Do you realize how many federal and state laws you broke? You could serve up to 20 years for that kind of offense.
