I have been wanting

to learn how to shoot for a while now. How would I go about doing that? Do I walk into this place and just tell them I want to learn? Do I need a card thingie or is that only if I want to buy a gun?

http://www.jrshootingsports.com/about.html

I noticed their firearm safety class, figured that might be a good place to start.

Help please?

First, you will need an FOID card. You can download the application online, follow the instructions, fill it out, get it notarized, plus a picture of yourself, mail it in, and wait a few weeks.

Second, there are many instructors out there who can teach you how to shoot. Though I don't actively teach, I'm actually an NRA instructor.

Now, I have some issues with JR Shooting... I don't like the people who run the place... and I know of at least one other local CLSB shooter who dislikes them as well. Personally, I would recommend Maxon's up in Des Plaines. I've been a regular there for years, and know the two owners Barry & Claudia. Claudia is an NRA instructor, who runs the Basic NRA class about once a month. I originally took my first instruction in one of her classes, and she's a FABULOUS instructor.

If you're interested, PM me and I'll give you my full name. Call Maxon's, ask for Claudia, and mention me, and go from there.

go to mega sports in plainfield. you not far at all for you.

tell them you need your picture done for the FOID. pay the 5 bucks to get it. grab a form. walk over to the rental area and look at all those pretty guns you can rent for close to nothing "just buy ammo and range fee, once you get your card"

when you do post up, i can shoot pretty decent and kinda know what i am doing.

i was never a fan of JR it would always be my last resort. its has a very small rental selection and the range is small and the people are just ok.

megasports gets my vote. huge rental selection

but you will need a foid card. any gun shop can get your picture taken and fill out the app and mail it for ya.

+1000 on Megasports as a range as well! I just recommended Maxon's, more because I can confidently recommend Claudia as an excellent starter instructor.

anyway to do what? Buy a gun or just go shooting.
To buy a gun. No. It's Illinois law.

I think I heard that you can go shooting with someone as a guest as long as they have a card. But I might not know what I'm talking about.

The FOID thing really seems weird to me. I grew up in Minnesota and I own a 30-06 and a 12 guage shotgun, but I keep them in Minnesota and only use them there so that I don't have to get a FOID card.

GAT Guns in West Dundee has a decent range, if you bring your own guns and ammo, they don't need to see a FOID card (IIRC). As for buying with out a FOID, no chance in Illinois.

Not totally true. You shoot by the rules of the range, and many of them will not allow you to shoot unless you have an FOID as well. I know JRs is like that.

I was referring to learning how to shoot properly. I'd prefer to do it through a proper class as opposed to bugging a friend and I don't want to obtain a FOID to do so.
