Just got my foid card, looking for advice on a first gun to buy. Ive never fired a handgun, only .22 rifles and 12 gauge shot guns. Im lookin for a handgun. any tips?

I spent 30% of my money on fast cars, 30% on women, and 30% on booze. The other 10% I wasted.

Invest some money in renting. See what feels good in your hand. Don't be ashamed to get a .22

deffinetly go rent first. that way you can get a feel for what is most comfortable for you.

look at Kblacks thread about shooting.

megasports has a huge selection of pistols for rent so you can try everything out.

remember in the end it takes time and practice to get accurate.

+1. Like any powerful tool or machine, knowing how to use it and not inadvertently hurt yourself and others with it is rather important. Many gun shops have NRA sponsored/subsidized handgun/weapons safety courses. Check the NRA website or with some local gun shops.

I've owned just about every caliber, I've had a Colt .22 long-rifle target shooter, a Taurus .38 special snub-nose revolver, a Glock .45, a Glock .40, a Glock 9 mm, a S&W .40, an AR-15, an AK-47, and I currently own a Beretta 9 mm 92FS/M9. I've shot H&K, Sig, .50 cal, they are ALL fun! Bottom line is you need to see what feels good in your hand, what you are comfortable shooting, and what you enjoy shooting. A couple of good places to go to rent/shoot handguns is G.A.T. Guns in Dundee: http://www.gatguns.com/ & J.R. Shooting Sports in Aurora: http://www.jrshootingsports.com/. Most of all...have fun! Shooting is a wonderful sport.

Argh!!!!

I sent in my renewal in May along with the $5 it said on the app. Well, apparently they didn't get it until after June 2nd which is when the fine went up to $10 so they sent mine back to me and I had to send a new check. I've been waiting ever since.....

Isn't there an upcoming hunting season? The State tends to get overwhelmed before hunting seasons.

Your screen name is Criminalgrrl and you ride a gixxer. Pretty sure there's some state law against you having a gun

I just got my FOID too. Applied in the first week of July and got it last week. I'm looking at handguns as well, though I would like to try hunting at some point, so I'll probably want a shotgun as well.

Don't know if anyone can clarify things, but is it legal to own a handgun in the city yet? Chicago had a handgun ban, if I'm not mistaken, but then the Heller case in D.C. seems to make local bans unconstitutional, so I don't know what the current status is.

Also, if there are any CLSB shooting events it would be awesome!

Legally? No.

Though people buy them and take their chances.

We have some shooting events on occasion.

Hopefully Heller will get to Chicago sometime in the near future, but don't hold your breath while Daily runs the city.

I was over at Maxon this weekend and the guys were saying that it'll happen sooner rather than later, but that there will probably be a 1 handgun limit per household. I'd bet this is more hearsay than anything else, but that's still annoying.

As a side note, I asked about the pistol training, and they are booked up until October 5th. Does anyplace else do a good job with basic pistol training? Iíll still go to Maxonís if itís the most recommended, but Iíd prefer not to have to wait over a month if possible.

Daley will be MORE than happy to spend the taxpayers $$$$ to fight what has been struck down as unconstitutional. It is the Chicago way.
