well last time i went fishing was maybe 10 years ago?
for the last couple months i have been going with my neighbor friends. it sparked my interest again.
so got rid of some of my equipment "over 10 years old" got a nice bait caster and spinner and slapped them on my rods that are still in perfect shape and been fishing when i can at the retention ponds around here.
i got a honey hole that yields on average 2-3 pound bass, but we got kicked out last week and while they were polite about it still sucks "private pond" and now i a reduced to 1-2 pounders on the local shit hole ponds.
anyway, just wanted to get a thread going, see who else has some honey holes they would mind sharing with the rest of us. maybe even get a small local group together every now and then or what not.
I do a little bit of salmon and trout fishing when at my family's lakehouse. we have 6 poles with downriggers. We catch up to 20lb salmon in lake Michigan.
you know the hassle of all that has driven many boat owners crazy. infact most of the guys i know that use to have boats sold them cause of the pain in the ass to maintain and expense. "unless your talking a mini alum haul with a tiny motor" FTW. its funny they say after all the crap the best fishing trips are the ones at the local ponds:jester
but bro, its helping me calm down, and its relaxing
Believe it or not, I grew up bay fishing and setting lobster traps on Long Island. And when I lived in MT I fly fished for most of my dinners. As much as I love it, I haven't touched a rod (stay on topic, please....) in a decade.
I'd be interested in this thread-- I'd like to get back out fishing with my dad when I come into town.
I went about a year or so ago in Northern Wisconsin with some friends. I was giving this some thought for next year. I thought this would be a good idea to take the kids to do...
My only luck while I am out on the Stratos is the huge Buzzes I catch. Of course I have no pictures, but that fish is huge. I use 12 ounce bottle or cans for bait.
I'm getting ready to start learning. I can cast and what not, but I don't know much if anything about lines, lures, etc. I have been given a setup via e-mail from an expert fisherman I know. I gave him a map of the lake we are on and told him what was in there. This guy and his dad are amazing fishermen. No lie, they tracked it once, and they caught, cleaned and ate 10,000 fish in a four year period. For real. So, I will take him at his word.
We can catch bass right off the pier up north. Come on up labor day weekend and do some fishing if you want.
Here is what I was given:
My advice for gear is a 5 1/2 foot to 6 foot ultralight rod. My favorites are Loomis (I have an SJR 600 I think with extremely fast action) or Fenwick or St. Croix, graphite. You don't need graphite for float fishing but you'll need it eventually for other methods. Put a Shimano ultralight reel on it, a fill it with Fireline 4 lb test, 1 lb thickness fishing line. Either smoke or yellow will work fine.
On the business end, use Eagle Claw aberdeen fish hooks, gold, size 8. The knot that you will need to learn how to tie is called the Palomar Knot. It is very, very easy to learn and is incredibly strong. It is the only knot that works with this type of line and the only one I use, period. You can google it and learn how to do it...piece of cake. Byron learned it at 5 years old in about 10 minutes.
Above the hook, you will need a float. I recommend strongly a Thill brand, pencil float, with a spring connector. As you are fishing in depths less that 5 feet, this will work well. Do not use big and clunky, plastic bobbers. They scare more fish than they catch. Set the float at about 3 feet if you are fishing in 5 feet of water. Fish will go up for a bait, rarely down.
In between the float and the hook, pinch a few split shot sinkers on the line...just enough so that your float is standing straight up and has at least half its length submerged. With that, you are ready to go. Make some practice casts off your pier until you can cast fairly accurately and can hit a spot 3 foot in diameter regularly.
For bait, you can't beat leaf worms. Any bait shop has them.
Then set your alarm for early morning--sunrise or before--and go get 'em. Morning is always best, followed by late afternoon/evening.
This should get you going. As fall approaches, the fish will go deeper and the shallows will no longer produce. if you are still fishing at that time of year, let me know and I will give you tips for fall fishing.

thats a nice starter for small pan fish."blue gill, sun fish, etc" i have been doing the artificial thing before i put all the stuff away, nowback into it, plus i am Texas rigging big time or rigged with no weight "working fake worms" and they pound the shit out if them its kick ass.
sunny days= spinner
cloudy and shallow water=popper
pissing off and catch a territorial bass=buzz bait
real heavy vegetation= frogs
bla bla bla most of the time, if something doesnt work, change it up. but the list above works good for me.
or fuck it lazy man 6 pack of beer.
silver minnows on a hook, 4 foot of line with a floater.
pound beer and pound the large mouth bass that nails the minnow.
I usually fished the Mississippi. If you really want to catch some shit, go there. I also go up 2 hours north in Wisconsin on the Wisconsin River. If you want to catch some really big stuff, go over night. Catch some big cats and sheephead. You can also catch Paddle fish, which looks almost like a dolphin with a paddle. Can't keep them, but fun to catch.
So we could do a mid week trip up to Winthrop Harbor, or if we went up to WI there are some 2 day packages although I'm not sure if I can make the time to do an overnight. Winthrop rates are pretty cheap especially if we do a midweek.
'went back to fishing this year. I use to go fishing with my father before rap music came out. We caught a couple of 17incher smallies at Door County Wisconsin last July, the rest were catch and release. I did some fishing at the retaining pond a few blocks from where I live and caught some large mouth bass (throwbacks). Anyway, we're going to try to fish in Buffalo park (Fox river) for catfish and small mouth bass maybe this weekend. My dad kept my rod and reel from when I was 16 years old and still works great. We'll try salmon again during fall season, I caught a 25lb salmon from the Chicago river by Lincoln Park Zoo back in early to mid 80's. Good luck and we'll exchange recipes.
after fishing last night and catching like 7 large mouth bass (average 1.2-2.5 pounds) i was so pumped i went to bed early last night and woke up at 5:30am to go back to that pond for some more. 2.5 hours later i dont have nothing but anger! i even think the fish were sleeping or something.
I have 4 poles and a small array of gear but I haven't fished since I started riding last year. Weather is nice? I'd rather ride. My fav is catfishing. Easy, throw some liver on a treble, cast it out as far as you can, lean the pole against something and attach a bell then commence beer drinking.
Haven't fished in about 7 years I think. Just went out on a sportfishing boat when I went to Cali two weeks ago, and loved it. Went for a half day (6 hours) and caught 2 keeper Bass. Couple barracudas (sp?) were caught as well, but no keepers. Cooked them up and ate em, and man now I want to get back into it! I still have an old rod/reel combo I'm gonna check to see if it's still good, and switch out at least the line. If anybody ever wants to go, especially down by Joliet, let me know!
been doing A LOT of fishing all over the place, from racine for salmon "didnt get shit" to just kicking ass at the local community ponds. i stumbled onto 1 that i caught this 2 1/4 pounder and then a friend caught this 3.4 pounder that i will not rest till i get this pig!
Check out the local forest preserves. I know there are a ton in dupage county. They just opened up a new place a year ago on royce Rd between Webber and Rt53. My dad says the fishing is good there. I like to fish the river by Starved rock for Strippers and for the Asain carp. They put up one hell of a fight when you get one. The cooling lakes at the power plants are good for some hybrid fish since the water is warm and they feed all year. I have been fishin almost every weekend this summer. I go to a private club I belong to off Rt126. My son has caught some 12-15 inch large mouth. Last weekend my dad and I caught over 100 fish. The majority was bluegill but we caught rock bass, large mouth, perch, and shad. They are about to restock the lake with trout as soon as duck hunting seasons starts. If your interested in fishing out there let me know. It's only three dollars to bring a guest in for the day and the fishing is always good. It's all catch and release on the Bass so they just keep getting bigger and bigger each year. The last one I pulled out was 19.5 inches and put up a hell of a fight.
