Started my first build

Tonight i ordered the first piece, 16" AR15 C.A.R. upper half, chrome lined chamber & bore; 1-9 twist, A2 flashider, standard iron sites, C.A.R. handguard, bolt carrier group & charging handle. Tried finding a stripped lower but EVERYWHERE is sold out because of all the people freaking out, i knew i should have picked one up last year when i was first thinking about it... If anyone is selling let me know, otherwise i'll be getting on a waiting list. Going to build the receiver myself, looking forward to the project :-)

Excellent! Sounds like a solid piece. Yes, you'll have a difficult time finding receivers, as AR components are disappearing like crazy. Call around, check out local gun shows, and be wary to not get price gouged.

I have a stripped lower I've been meaning to (learn to) build for a while now.

Mega Sports had some stripped lowers as well. I forgot the brand, but it looked OK from my untrained eye.

Jeremy, do you have the special tools needed to assemble this machine? From what I recall you need at least a barrel tool and some sort of vice padding, plus some gas line tools if I recall.

The upper was purchased complete, so the barrel is already attached. And as far as I know no special tools are required to assemble the lower.

That's probably the rout I should go as well. I can't quite afford the whole thing at once, and I'd like to know how it works inside and out.

Keep me informed. As I said, Mega sports had the stripped frame ready to build up. If I recall correctly from purchasing mine, it's the part that has the serial number, so it's the part that counts as purchasing a weapon and needs all the paperwork done and cool off period and all that.

I'd like to follow along with you and learn what pitfalls to avoid.

sounds good, i found some double star stripped lower receivers for $159 (in stock, ready for pickup), or if I wait 6-8 weeks I can get a stag stripped lower for $120. What do you guys suggest?

If you're looking at bargain lowers, I'd go for the Stag vs the DoubleStar. I've heard too many mixed reviews about DoubleStars to trust them.

So...um...I have a question.

Since my lower was purchased during the ban, and I build it up *now* before the next (assumed ban)...will it be Illegal if it has banned items on it?

I guess that's difficult to answer since the gov hasn't figured that out themselves yet, I'm just curious what you think.

Anything you do before the next ban should be fair game, you'll be grandfathered in.

That's what I'm thinking, but you never know.

I'm brushing the dust off my AR15 forums account...I have one of the oldest accounts there, and probably the lowest post count. LOL

I figure I'll read up a bit and figure out what my next steps should be. I think I'm going to start on the lower.

When are you actually assembling yours?

i donno, gonna go look at those lowers after work today, best case senerio is i buy one, take it home in 3 days, haven't ordered a part kit yet but that'll probably take a week or so to come in from the time i order it. Upper should be here this week some time, already assembled, and i'll be ordering a stock when i order the lower parts kit. so i guess probably in a couple weeks if i buy that receiver today, if I don't and get on the waiting list for a stag receiver it'll probably be in 2-3 months.

well i looked at the doublestar receivers at mega today and they looked really nice, most the reviews I read were positive, so i picked one up to try out. I'll post up how it goes together next week

Edit: also just ordered a mil spec 6pos stock, RRA lower parts kit, 3-30round mags, should have everything sometime next week, can't wait to put it all together :-)

Good deal! I'm looking at a longer, fluted barrel and tactical rails for my build. So mine is probably going to be about $250 more.

Where did you find the RRA lower parts kit? I can find triggers, but not whole lower kits.

I figure I'll start on the lower first.

if you want the match trigger and the lower kit from RRA you can get it at mega for like $200, if you just want the RRA kit with standard trigger you can get it all over the web for about $70, but finding a website that isn't out of stock is tough, i got the last one from evilblackrifleshop.com

do you have to be 21 with foid to own an ar or is that just pistols? Also, does it end up costing less, or about similar with just better quality/more customized for yourself when building one?

FOID = firearm owners identification

needed for any gun that isn't an antique (and maybe for antiques too); 21 for handgun, 18 for long gun

and since you're in Illinois make sure you can even own an AR where you are.

Also AR's are considered handguns (because you can make it a pistol) and have a 3 day waiting period and you must be 21 to own one.

The advantage to building your own is that you can save some money, but more importantly you can build exactly what you want. You can get the barrel you want, the stock you want, the sights you want, etc saving you money in the long run by not swapping out pieces of an off the shelf rifle.

I purchased an AR15 "rifle" last January and picked it up 24 hours later. Last summer, my buddy and his brother bought one each and picked up the next day. There are AR15 pistols and they specify pistol (shorter barrel, no stock just a tube sticking out), that one you have to wait 72 hours before pick up. There are also pistolized AK47 and others.

FALSE

While the AR can easily be converted to a "Pistol" version, you had better not get caught with that configuration, unless the lower is stamped as such. An AR in rifle form is just that - a Rifle, not a pistol.

"PURCHASE
A buyer is required to show his Firearms Owner’s Identification Card (FOID) when purchasing any firearms or ammunition. Any seller is required to withhold delivery of any handgun for 72 hours, and of any rifle or shotgun for 24 hours, after the buyer and seller reach an agreement to purchase a firearm. The waiting period does not apply to a buyer who is a dealer, law enforcement officer, or a nonresident at a gun show recognized by the Illinois Department of State Police. The seller must retain for 10 years a record of the transfer, including a description of the firearm (including serial number), the identity of the buyer, and the buyer’s FOID number.
A federally licensed dealer must contact the Department of State Police for a background check, for which there is a $2.00 fee. Any sales at gun shows, including dealers and private parties, must contact the state police for a background check.
Private parties selling firearms at gun shows must ensure the buyer has a FOID card and the buyer must undergo a background check. It is unlawful to sell or give any handgun to a person under 18, or any firearm to a person who is not eligible to obtain a FOID."

I hope Jeremy's build is going better than mine.

I'm still having trouble finding the lower parts kit for the AR (a quality one at least), and I'm not finding a good paint that I can mix into different shades for the camo pattern I want to do...I may just have to try model master paints to practice and get the Duracoat sooner than I figured.

So thus far, I've dusted off my stripped frame....and...um...that's about it.
