And to think, in the 60's and probably into the 70's, many schools had rifle classes to learn basic marksmanship.

My buddies from the country that I went to SIU with (graduated in '07) told me they use to go to high school with loaded rifles in their gun racks in case they ran into their trophy buck on the way to or from school. And it's not like they were hidden either.

Sorry not arguing semantics. With parents or students.

All parents say their children are honor roll or straight A students. The school can not say otherwise.

Just like the kid with the shotgun in the truck off school property was an angel. The street he was parked on bisected the school property and he also had numerous infractions such as racial slurs towards teachers.

uhhm..not seeing how this relates to this instance? Sure, school rules say no "guns/weapons or look-alikes"...when does following shit to the letter stop though?? How would they have responded to him using a wadded up piece of paper to use with the lego guy and imagine it was a gun, since it would technically look like the form of a gun? I can understand why a kid with a REAL shotgun in his truck would get in trouble, but not seeing ANY correlation between the two, not to mention the age difference between this and your example above.

It stops when people stop trying to get around it. How many times did you play semantics with your teachers?

The other case was to point out that what the parents say is not always the case.

eh, not too much until my junior/senior year ..although i don't see how the no gun/look-alike rule could be interpreted any differently, or how arguing about how it was handled is arguing semantics?

Still.. sure, he should get reprimanded for it since it is against the rules (and would teach him a little about making sure to know them), but to the extreme of almost getting suspended for it is a little much, especially with the age taken into consideration

Although I do agree that parents (or most) see their kids as angels, and an honor roll student could still be as bat-shit insane as anyone else. Didn't notice the comment you were responding to while skimming through.

Its called 'zero tolerance'. Schools officials do this so they dont have to think anymore. Theres no more common sense anymore in school administration.

It's called this because I do not want to justify myself to you at a later date just because what I called gum was candy.

The student was brought into the principal's office to discuss what he did. That is all that happened. The parent was notified for one reason or another and the parent contacted the paper.

"Almost Suspended" Like most schools I am sure they have a code of conduct for students and parents to follow. Most have a progressive discipline policy which goes from a teacher student conference to expulsion. A teacher student conference is just a teacher telling you to stop a certain behavior in class. One step away from that is suspension. So anytime a student is corrected by a teacher it is an "Almost Suspension"

Did your parents contact the newspaper every time you spoke with the principal?

The parent didn't even say if the kid got anything more than a talking to. The parent said they were just building Legos and this happened. What if the kid was running around a a crowded cafeteria pretending to shoot people, and generally not following directions. Would it be okay for the student to be sent to the principal's office for this?

The school can not comment on what happened because it would be breaking privacy laws, so you only have the parent's word of what happened.

The New York Daily News is an "Almost Suspension" away from the Weekly World News.

My wife and son were threatened with arrest by a middle school principal because my son drew historically accurate WW2 cartoons (with input from his friends) and assigned each of their names to the world leaders relevant at the time. Apparently when the Jewish kid said it would be funny if he was Hitler in the cartoons (and was drawn that way), the principal literally went into hysteria with threatening on no less than 10 occasions in his face and my wife's that he would call the cops and have them arrested for Hate Crimes. After about 40 minutes of that shit, and an assistant principal trying to calm the head guy down my wife finally just got up and left... My son got 5 days internal suspension for a cartoon.

Zero tolerance, in a lot of cases = excuse for adults to stop using common sense and a blank license to act like an asshole... "Because that's policy"

He was sent to the principal's office. That is it. Nothing more. I would be willing to say he was being an ass and making machine guns sounds with it in the cafeteria. And being sent to the office for this is no big deal.. It was the Teabagger parent that called the paper.

Read some of the threads on here and see how people over-react as soon as something happens.

The luger that died fencing and Plexiglas is needed. Some of the home owner association threads you would think our members sit on the Chicago City Council with their reactions.
