What can I get in Crook county?

New to guns, never fired one before. I don't have my foid, but will apply soon.

anyways i always wanted an ak47 or any cool top spec weapon, but it turns our they're all banned in crook county.

so since I dont know much about guns, WTF can I "legally" own in this POS? are shotguns ok? other kinds of rifles?

Im not that into handguns but will probably buy one down the road. but i want a rifle or long gun for my first.

I love many options, so something with a big aftermarket would be nice so i can customize it with different parts, something easy to maintain.

also something with affordable ammo, dont want something where a box is $30.

I'll probably take some classes and spend time at the range. eventually I want to hunt some game.

Im not in chicago, im in skokie, so disregard my location, dont have to deal with their crap.

just make sure you're using it for sports only. I the wonderful county we reside you can't have anything premeditated. Even self defense. Since you have to protect yourself (and others) with something, having that something would be considered a premeditated action. They prefer "A family was slaughtered while..." newspaper headers to "A burglar was shot while..." I guess it sounds catchier.

no, i don't plan on using a gun for defense. i know the criminals are more valuable than me.

it'll be purely for hunting, shooting at a legally designated place like a range. i just want to excercise my 2nd ammend right.

just another hobby I want to get into.

Cheapest knockoffs are about $1,500 but I can get a Chicago legal one for you for around $1,400. Let me know if you're interested.

All AK-47's are Full Auto and go for a lot more than that.
Anything not FA is a knock off.

The knockoffs are going for over a grand?

Why not just get an AR-15? There are TONS of aftermarket goodies, and you can make them as much of a "cool top spec weapon" as you want.

I would love to have an AR-15 to practice with, but I can't justify the cost right now.

If you want to use it for hunting evantually in IL, get a shotgun as rifles are not allowed. Plenty of discussion on which one to get if you search. Problem with a shotgun, its not too much fun at the range except for shooting clay pigeons.

For having fun cheaply at the range get something in a 22.

right now i'm specifically trying to research of buying my first firearm. ak, and ar and other cool things are banned. they probably aren't good for beginners anyways. would be like a noob riding a literbike i guess. i need my ninja 250 of the gun world. lol.

they really are making owning a gun such a hassle with all their technicalities. I think I'm better off just getting my foid, and renting stuff at the range. that way i don't have to worry about owning anything.

I think you are a bit confused and noone can give you good advice because you are not clear on the use of the firearm you are looking to purchase.

basically i was looking at the local and state laws, and they list a bunch of things which are illegal. but im not sure what's left that is legal.

its so confusing for a newb.

sorry for the ignorant questions.

Then you came to the right place, now tell us what you would like and why and the advice will follow.
Just to get you started:

Hunting in IL for Deer: Bow and Arrow, Shotgun, Pistol (Each allowed at different seasons)

Not many places to shoot an AK in IL, the only one I know of is Buffalo.

The most economical ammo is 22.

$300-$400. i want a long gun like a shot gun or rifle.

is the ruger 22/10 legal in cook county. to possess? people say those are reliable, in my price range, customizable, and good for beginners.

i dont need to hunt. i wont be doing that often, maybe once in a while, so thats not a big deal. i want to shoot it at a range 90% of the time, just for fun and practice.

Shotgun: Remington 870 12ga you can get for that or less in a combo (short and long barrel) and it is very customizable as you indicated you like accessories.

I am sure someone else will chime in about rifle recommendations.

1st the law.

Don't confuse Cook County with the city of Chicago.

As far as I know there are no restrictions in Skokie that would prevent you from owning anything. I just got off the phone with Skokie PD (847-982-5900) and an officer was goint to call me back because the lady on the phone had no idea about a very specific question I had.

With a budet maxing out at $400 kiss an decent AK or AR good bye. The Ruger 10/22 which I know is 100% legal is a great idea for several reasons.

The main being cost of ammo.

Arrogance has to be earned.

While the 870 is alos a good choice it is horrible for your situation.

1) not many ranges allow it
2) at $25 for 100 rounds of cheap ammo, well you could get 500 rounds of .22lr and pocket change.

As you stated, this is not a defense gun. And if you were a hunter youd have friends to talk to about guns, but you dont, so your here!

sorry for the confusion, sure i want an ak, but i admitted that its not legal in cook based on the assualt weapons ban of 2006. it explicitly lists the ak, its variants, the ar, and a bunch others as no allowed to posses inside the county.

so that idea left me asap. and even if it was legal, i'd probably not buy it for my first. i do want one someday. but not now.

cheap ammo would be great. get the most bang for the buck, so to speak.

i've never been hunting either. i want to do it someday. sorry, it's just that my dad never did these things with me so I have to learn it all by myself at an advanced age (24). lol. i hope to do things with my kids whenever i have some. but i need to teach myself first.

i always thought that Cook County assault weapons ban was lifted...hm
Bunch of friends are owning them AKs and ARs and you can go to Maxons and buy yourself AR or AK all day long, last time I checked and it was 3 weeks ago.

City of Chicago is different - not sure about that, but county should be OK. Now, the other thing is that for $400, you can not get any assault rifle, get a 22lr plinker, or get something old - like Mosin/nagant

There is still a Cook County assault weapons ban, but my understanding of it is as long as the municipality you are in exercises home rule then you don't need to worry. That is unless that municipality has laws against owning a specific firearm. Most places in cook you can own "banned" weapons. That's my understanding on the ban, but I could be wrong.

Try looking at an AR15-22. You get the look of an AR15 (M4) but with cheaper ammo (550 rds/$15). They cost around $450-$600. Cabela's selling one for $489 and they're in Cook. GatGuns sells them for $469 I think. You can use them at mosr shooting ranges. FOID first.
